What about your pet?

Please excuse me if I've overlooked this topic, but I am curious as to how everyone's pets have adjusted to the baby. As for my two... Sky has does just as I knew she would, she has been very gentle and sweet... And honestly doesn't pay much attention to him she's pretty calm all the time. Bella on the other hand is a terrier, always curious and can have her hyper moments. I was really worried about how she would behave... But I am soooooo proud of her. I have to brag lol... She absolutely loves Knox. I can ask her where baby Knox is and she will check his bed, swing, play may, rock n play or carseat until she finds him. She loves to sitting near him... She is an entirely different dog. I am so happy he will be growing up with these two dogs.

Re: What about your pet?

  • The cat is terrified of Dominic, which i am ok with...lol

Emjay (yellow lab) is gentle but very indifferent about him. she loves him and very protective over the house now, more so then before. She checks on him when he cries (sometimes) but when i tell her to watch over baby brother, she could care less. she doesnt even get out of bed in the middle of the night if he gets up. i call that indifferent

  • I have a 3 y.o. Jack Russell and as everyone knows they can be very jumpy dogs, but Stella has been surprisingly great with little A. Dogs are so freaking smart, and it amazes me how intuitive they are.

  • Blue my black lab sniffs DS a lot but is fairly disinterested ... He'll like it a lot more when DS is able to play with him. But he does come sit beside him or lay down next to him during tummy time, which is so cute.

  • my daschund is obsessed with anything that smells like him. he will jump into the swing, carseat or pnp given the chance. our mini shepard is a rescue and doesnt like when he cries (doesnt like loud noises in general) but tolerates him if I put him near her and she will lick him

  • We have a great dane and a chihuahua mix. They usually sniff her a little here and there and then move along about their business. If she's crying sometimes they'll go up to her and sniff her, but nothing more than that. I'm sure once she's more mobile and able to pull on their ears and such then they'll know something! The only difference for them is that I don't give them as much attention, thankfully DH does!

  • We have a 2yo golden retriever that acts as though she's 3 months old. She's great with Hannah when she bothers to pay her attention, licking her hands and feet. Our biggest issue is her trying to get inbetween us and any visitors and DD. It's not a protective thing, it's a 'pet me' thing. She gets right up in peoples' faces. It's obnoxious.

At first I thought you meant you had one dog. I was wondering how that would work !!

  • We have two middle-age cats, and they have very little interest in the baby. Occasionally, they'll walk up and sniff her head while I'm holding her on the couch. This always results in them pulling away quickly with a look of sheer disdain on their faces. They don't appear to like baby smell!

  • We have two as well, our 4 year old is just as good as we expected. Our two year old is doing much better now, when we first brought the baby home she was terrified and hid for a few weeks (except for meals and outside time) now she only hides when DD cries.

They both bark more now which I could do without.

This is how our yellow lab is too.

  • Aries (cat) is curious, but still jumpy. He always sniffs around DD, then he'll rub his face against her hand or foot. He'll dash off if she squeals or jerks, though. He loves to curl up next to me in the chair or on the couch while we nurse.
  • Our three cats pretty much couldn't care less.  They're a little needier with us since we have less time to give them attention, so when we are baby-free they're all over us.  They aren't interested in her, though.  They sniffed her when she first came home and we "offered" her to them to sniff, then moved on.  And she doesn't care about them yet, either (though she does like the soft texture of "my" cat's fur and will smile when she touches her).

  • Our cat just ignores him, but when he starts to cry she will look like she is annoyed.

  • Gabe, my yellow lab tries to get a lick in whenever he sees him then he leaves him alone. Hershey is a Saint Bernard/Great Dane mix and he sleeps by his crib all the time. When he cries though he runs outside. I'm glad they're so gentle with him.

  • Loki was doing fine until this past week. He's been quite an a$$hole lately and it's making me nervous. Just today he has almost trampled Lily when I've had her next to me on the couch or bed. He never even went near her before, but he's been having these little spastic freakouts and I need to either hold her or only put her down in the same room as me, whereas before I used to be able to put her down anywhere and he didn't care or go near her.

I have a Loki too! She is great with J, and she will 'tell' me if he cries [like j didn't already hear him, thanks dog!] She is a lab mix. I also have Hermes, a 2 yr old lab/boxer who acts like a puppy still and is a bit bouncy so we have to watch him. He'll also give DS bit wet kisses if he gets a chance but it doesn't seem to bother DS. They also bark a lot but DS seems to not mind that either. I think he got used to the noise in utero maybe.

  • My dachshund (also named Bella) is completely in love with Thomas. She always checks on him and if we get distracted, she tries to lick his entire body. She's very protective too. Whenever we have visitors and they hold the baby, she will come close to them and check if baby is ok.

She was very spoiled prior to the baby's arrival, so I was scared she would reject him, but she loves him.

My two year old Westie was there for DS' home birth and stayed right by my side the whole time. He was so excited once the baby was born, he couldn't get close enough to the baby, and the midwife allowed him to lick my son's head clean - very cute.

For the first couple of weeks he wanted to stay close to the baby at all times, and would always check the crib to see if the baby was there.  Then he turned jealous for a while, wanted lots of attention, and became more work than the baby himself. After I recovered and was able to take the dog and baby out together things got a lot better.  Now the fun days have begun - DS has finally discovered his furry big brother and loves to touch his fur, and the dog likes to lay next to DS on the play mat.  If DS is upset my dog sometimes comes over and tries to comfort him, while other times he crawls underneath the sofa to try and get away from the sound, lol.

Bella is a Westie too :)
