Christmas shopping for older kids...

SUCKS. There is nothing fun to buy her anymore. Clothes, shoes, computer, etc. No more toys.

Re: Christmas shopping for older kids...

  • Really? At 8? My niece and nephew were still totally into toys then. They liked the clothes and computer stuff, too, but I think even now my niece is asking for American Girl things and pillow pets, and she's 10.

  • She asked for some AG stuff...but she doesn't ever really play with it, so I hate to buy it. I bought her a gift certificate for her stocking and we're going to lunch at the AG store in New York the day after Christmas. So she'll have plenty of time to spend it! :)
  • That sounds very fun! My sister is planning a trip to NYC to do the same thing.
  • I hear you.  I'm having a hard time trying to figure out what to get for my 8 and almost 10 year olds.  No more toys.  Any clothes that I like and would buy they never like.  I have no clue what to get them this year.

The 8 year old still likes American Girl but the 10 year old doesn't.

  • Yeah...  luckily my 7 yo is into toys as much as "cute clothes," as she put it.

My neice wants legos and she's 9.  I guess you have to make the most of what you can.

  • My daughter at 8 years old still loved playing with Barbie's and loved those craft making toys.
  • That's a tough age. When I taught 3rd/4th grade I gave out little prizes, and even finding those was challenging.

Does she like books? It could be fun to shop for those, and to remember which ones you liked at that age.

We don't do Barbies, but I did pick up a couple of science kits today...one is make your own perfume which I think she'll like. I also got her a knitting kit, we'll see what she thinks. :)

Yes, she loves books. I bought her a couple at the book fair this week and got her an Amazon gc to go in her stocking for books on her Kindle.

  • I have purchased a few books from this site as gifts. You provide information about the child, best friend, special adult, pet etc and the child stars in the novel. It's for ages 6-12.

Your daughter must be very mature for her age! My niece is 9 and my godson is 10 and they're both really still into toys, very much so. Legos, dolls, etc.

She's not overly mature, but she has never really been into toys. I mean, she has a crazy imagination and that has always served her well...more than your typical toy.

My daughter has never really been big into toys either and I already have a tough time shopping for her.  I can't imagine how hard things will be in another 3 years.

I tend to buy kits that she can make something, she does enjoy that. She likes art supplies as well.
