Polio Vax ?

Addy has received all of her vaccines with the exception of Hep B and also the one for Rotavirus (which is no longer an option anyway). The Polio I was unsure about and so she started getting it at her 4 month appt and has now had 2 doses. She will be getting her 3rd dose at her 9 mo appt at the end of the month.

My question is... I thought the Polio vax was given orally. She has never once been given anything orally at the doctor's office. Does anyone know why this could be? Does this have to do with me leaving out the Hep B? I think they might have to "alter" the combo shots they give her in order to leave out the Hep B or something. I thought the "best" version of the Polio vax was the oral one so I'm a little concerned now that I realized this.

Re: Polio Vax ?

  • I think the oral is combined with the roto one.

  • The girls have had all of their vaccines at two different practices and none have been oral.

  • The only oral one given to LOs is the Rotavirus.

  • Parker's polio vaccine was oral. She hated it.

  • Our pedi doesn't do any oral vaccines, they're all shots.

  • So it seems to be kind of all over the place as to if LOs are getting any oral vaccines at all, not just the Polio one. I will be asking her pedi about it because I am curious but it's interesting to see that so many haven't been given any type of oral vaccines when I thought it was the norm.

    Same with us.
  • LO one got an oral one. It was combined with rotavirus. Her shot record shows that there different brands on vaccinations and that could be the difference in why some get oral ones and some don't. It depends on the kind your dr uses.

  • I found at this website (https://www.immunizationinfo.org/vaccines/polio) that the oral Polio vax is no longer given in the US. Something to do with the oral vaccine having a higher risk of actually giving the patient a case of Polio than the injectable version. Called "vaccine-associated paralytic polio (VAPP)." Were those who got the oral vaccine outside of the US?

It's weird to me that even though there is a standard immunization schedule (meaning the recommended schedule), how each vaccine is given does not seem to have a "standard."

  • My oldest born in 95 got oral polio vac. Ds2 was born in 2007 and at that time and currently it was no longer recommended. The oral vac is the rotavirus.
