Buying bottles?

The previous post got me thinking...do you recommend buying bottles prior to the birth? I'm planning on breastfeeding my twins, but know that it might not work out. My plan was to buy a medela gift set that has a couple of bottles and breastmilk storage bags more so DH can bottle freed them breastmilk. I guess if I can't bf I would run out and buy bottles? What do you all recommend?

Re: Buying bottles?

  • I would recommend buying bottles before. You never know what's going to happen and it's better to be prepared because you will not feel like going out to buy them afterwards and you will have your hands full! My boys were born at 37 weeks one of them went to the special care nursery for 3 days because of low blood sugar. He was started on bottles there I had to supplement formula when we were able to come home so it was good that I already had the bottles. Hopefully you won't need them but better to be prepared! Especially with multiples!!

  • Yep. I am also bfing, but one of my guys needs supplement. Even though you have good intentions it is best to be prepared.

  • Thanks for the advice! Is there a type you'd recommend? What about size? 5 oz?
  • Until they start eating more I just used the bottles that you pump into, the little 3 oz ones. I got all I wanted from the NICU. I see no point in the 5 oz ones, just get the 8 oz since you will blow past those 5 oz so quickly.
  • Everyone (and every baby) could have a different preference.  We used and loved the playtex drop ins with DD so we are starting out with those for the twins too.  I have heard people love the Tommy Teepee bottles.

  • This. We use and love the Drop ins.  We bought 16 4oz (fed every 3 hours) and used those for 2 months and we have 12 8oz now (feeding every 4 hours except at night).  That way we only have to do bottles once a day.  We wash nipples and fill bottles with formula before we go to bed and then add the water when it's time to eat.

I hope you have success with either pumping or breast feeding.  But I found it very time consuming to do either and didn't have much luck with it.  I nursed for about 2 weeks and pumped for a month and I was beginning to lose my mind.  Some MoMs can make it work, I just really struggled with it.  You won't really know until your babies are here how it will all work for you, I'd say it's better to have them, rather than have to try and run out and get them if you decide you need them.

  • I guess my opinion is different from most here but I didn't buy bottles before. I had planned on BF but wasn't able to and ended up pumping for a few weeks and FF since then. In the hospital they had little disposable bottles that were 2oz and we used those while there. They sent us home with tons and used them the first day.

Once home we bought 4oz Avent bottles. DH went to the store the day after we were home to buy bottles. I told him 4oz and he picked them out. We used them for awhile and the girls did well with them except they drooled a lot of formula out. My DH doesn't mind running out to the store when we need stuff so it was fine to just send him out to get them.

One day they weren't clean and in a pinch I used two Dr. Brown bottles I had from my shower and they worked so well. I ended up buying more of those and got a deal with some starter packs that came with 4oz and 8oz bottles. We still mainly use the 4oz bottles and I am glad I got that size. Yes they won't use them the whole time but it was almost the same price for me to get the starter packs which included 4oz bottles and 8oz bottles.
