Breastfeeding

lurker needing advice/ encouragement

ds is 7 weeks old tomorrow and nursing him is still excruciating. we went and saw a lactation consultant at 5 weeks who diagnosed a posterior tongue tie and upper lip tie. the lip tie was snipped a few days later and the tongue ripped enough that any further snipping would require knocking him out, so we left it.

i have pretty flat/small nipples with large aereola so i know some of the initial pain is him drawing out my nipples but they literally have bruises on them and when i unlatch him my nipple isnt round so i know he isnt latching right.

my health insurance only covers a fraction of the lc visit and i just got all my hospital bills so i really cant afford another visit. i just dont know what to do. im determined to be succesful at breastfeeding for at least a year but the amount of pain i am still in is just not right.

does anyone have any advice

Have you checked your local hospitals for breastfeeding support groups? If they are held at the hospital they will most likely have LCs available at the group for free. It's not one on one time but I'm sure they could help.

ETA: It sounds like you have had a rough time but you've done an awesome job sticking with it! The LC may suggest a nipple shield, or if you aren't able to get to an LC that could be something to try on your own. I've seen Medela shields in Target.

I should look for a support group, thank you for the suggestion

I should have mentioned I do have a nipple shield already, I use it during my night time feeds because its easier to latch DS in the dark.  it is less painful with the shield but still hurts.  and I can feel him squishing the plastic, so I'm pretty sure that is what he is doing to my nipples when there is no shield, I just don't know how to get him to stop.  I had to use the shield for every. single. feed with DS1 and it was such  a pain in the butt, I'm trying to avoid that this time.

  • Have you tried laid back nursing? Somehow this helped LI latch correctly and saved BFing for me. Google it and watch the video.
Good you for being so determined. It's really hard in the beginning. GL.
