When to Transition to Toddler Beds...

How old were your LOs when you transitioned from from their cribs to toddler beds?  My parents are currently building and when theirs is complete, we will be buying their house from them...thinking maybe that when we move (which will probably be March or so...), that we would just transition them then - break their crib down into daybeds, or may just buy toddler beds - not sure which is the best route.  They turn 2 in March, is that too early??? It's been WAY TOO LONG since DS1 was that age - and I can't remember!!

Re: When to Transition to Toddler Beds...

  • We moved DS #1 over to a bed when he was 17 months because I was very pregnant with #2 and needed the crib.  We waited until DS #2 was 2...we only moved him because he was climbing out.  I will keep our LO's in a crib as long as possible.  If they are not climbing out and they are sleeping well why change what is working?  Although a move is always a good transition to something new....sorry I am no help :)

  • Our daughter was just a little over 2 when we switched her to a toddler bed and about 3 1/2 when she moved to a twin bed. We had a crib that converted to a toddler bed and it worked really well since she was very familiar and comfortable with the set-up (we kept the bumper and same bedding) but felt like a big girl with the ability to get in and out. I think we were super fortunate that she didn't get out at night or during naps; she just kept on sleeping like there was no difference.

With the twins, we'll play it by ear, but I'd imagine that we'll keep them in cribs as long as humanly possible. Maybe until high school?

  • My oldest is 3.5 and still sleeps in a crib.  Embarrassed  But we are planning on getting her a twin bed after the first of the year, so she'll be almost 4.  She's never tried to climb out of her crib so we figured we'd wait as long as possible.  For the last few months, we've been talking to her about her big girl bed (she was NOT happy about it at fiirst but is now very excited) so it's not too much of a shocker when we switch her over.  She's definitely ready.

  • I kept my twins in cribs until they were 3. We moved them to toddler beds. It was pretty rough at first. They'd get out of bed, wrestle on the floor, etc. My kids were in the toddler beds until they were 6.5. They weren't ready to give them up! They've been in twin loft beds for a few months now. It goes by fast!

  • We tried at 2 years for no reason except that that is when we transitioned our oldest.  It didn't work out and they are still in their cribs.  After a week, it got to the point where they were asking to have their cribs back so, we obliged.  : )

Don't fix anything unless it's broken.  GL!

  • At 2.5 he climbed out two times in a row. We converted to a full and he loves it.

  • We transitioned at 14ish months, since apparently, I gave birth to monkeys. Unless they're climbing out or are 36 inches tall, I wouldn't fix what isn't broken. (36 inches is the AAP recommendation)

I would also be hesitant to do two major transitions at once. Things will be unsettled enough without adding something else to the mix.
