3 year old throws up every time she is put in a car seat!

Hi everyone!

My 3 year old daughter recently started throwing up every time she is put in a car seat, even before she is buckled!

It first started out only in my car (sometimes I would have to move my husband's car) so figured it was if I had to walk away she would get upset. However, even today my mom was bringing her somewhere in her car (and she was excited to go where they were going), and she just threw up with being placed in the seat.

Has anyone heard of this happening? Tried searching the web and there is not much info :) Wasn't sure if anyone has any advice or anything, so anything you can provide is appreciated!

Thank you!

  • Hmm... a little more info please.  Does she instantly become upset and work herself into it?  Do you notice any pumping of the tummy to work it up?  Is she always in the car same time of day, and is it multiple times a day?  Is it possible there is some residual smell of vomit on the seat that you can't detect that is inducing?  Is the car seat moved to all the cars or is it different carseats?

If it is behavioral I woulld handle it one way...if it is physical/medical, obviously differently...

  • No, I haven't. Is she making herself throw up? Can she verbalize why this is happening?

  • My guess is that it happened once and made a strong impression.  Now she remembers the feeling and it makes her gaggy/nauseous.  This may be aided along by a smell of barf on the carseat or car upholstery.

I'd make sure there's no lingering odor by using pet stain remover.  Then I'd see if she just sits in the backseat of the car but not in the carseat, will she be okay.  I'd try to re-acclimate her to the car so that the association between the carseat and barfing is not so strong.
