Smash Cake question....

Tomorrow we (me, DH and DD) are celebrating DD's birthday.  I was planning on making one of those giant cupcakes.  I thought it would be cute to have DD next to it for pictures and such.  And, I'm thinking now, it will probably turn into a smash cake.

A couple questions:  I'm sure this varies wildly, but how much smash cake did your LOs actually eat?  And - after the smashing - was the rest of the cake tossed or were you able to eat any of it?

I ask because as I said, it's just the 3 of us, but DH and I want some cake too.  :)  So I was wondering if we'd be able to count on salvaging some of the smash cake for us to eat.  Also, depending on how much of the smash cake can be eaten (by DD or DH and me), I'm debating whether to do the giant cupcake cake from scratch OR just use a mix for it and make cupcakes from scratch for us to eat.  Hmmmmm...  Thoughts?  Suggestions??

Re: Smash Cake question....

  • DS ate soooo much frosting off of his smash cake. He didn't really get much into the cake, only a couple handfuls.

I just went to BJs & bought a "Cake Boss" decorated cake . I suck at decorating cakes, so it was worth the $20 to me.Stick out tongue

  • Kaeldra also ate mostly frosting. But far from all of it. We didn't eat hers, but we had cake a few days later at the party. It would have been perfectly edible if we had wanted it though. But I think it depends on whether you mind baby slobber.

  • I baked Cole a giant cupcake, and he just smeared and ate some frosting on the side facing him.  The other side was pretty much untouched.  I didn't feel like tossing a perfectly good cake so we ate part of it after dinner.

  • DS ate just a bit of the frosting from one side.  The rest of the cake was probably edible, but I had a 2 tier cake for everyone else, so I just threw it away.

  • Our DD HATED taking smash cake pics!! She didn't do much damage to it DH ate some that night and said it was tasty! I was trying to save myself until thanksgiving with all the goodies I am baking for that, but did have a nibble and thought it tasted good not like my slobbery, crying baby got her hands pushed in it:P. Enjoy your celebration!!

  • DD didn't eat that much of it but mostly because it didn't take long to get the pictures we wanted and then I took it away right after.

We could've saved it if we wanted to and just cut some of the top off and ate the rest but I didn't I just tossed it because I had made a sugar-free pumpkin/apple/SP cake for her and it didn't taste very good so no one else would've wanted to eat it lol.

  • DS ate about 1/4 of his...the cake and frosting included! (For smash cake photos) There is no way we could have salvaged any of it to eat. I grabbed it from a Safeway bakery the day of the photo shoot. The cake was an 8 inch round with butter cream frosting.

For his party this week I plan on doing cupcakes for everyone and a small cake for DS.

  • Well, DD has just about zero interest in her cake.  LOL.  She didn't really want to touch the frosting (a texture thing, i think) and even though DH tried to demonstrate how tasty the frosting was, she still wasn't into it.  DH dug out some cake for her and she did eat a couple bites of that, but, again, she just wasn't into it.  Oh well!  So there was LOTS of cake left in very decent condition for me and DH to enjoy.
