BFing/Poop Journal

For new moms and STM, do you/did you guys keep a journal of when you breastfeed, how it went, etc? Also- do you keep a journal of your babe's poop (like what it looks like; what time he/she pooped, etc.)? I have been reading in some of my books it's a good idea and that you can show it to the pedi to make sure everything is on track. I am kind of a super organized person, so this sounds like something up my alley, and it might help me keep track of things easier as well. Or do you just keep track in your head? Am I being obsessive about it? TELL ME PLEASE.

Also HAPPY FRIIIDAY!

I'm planning on using the Sprout app on my phone. It tracks everything for you. Also because an actual physical journal is just one more thing I will misplace/lose.

There is an app? *gasp* I'm using it. That will make way more sense for me.

  • I tried writing it down AND putting it on an app on my phone. It worked for like the first week. I'm seriously too busy between diaper changes, nursing, pumping after nursing, trying to drink enough water and eat enough calories to worry about writing this shet down. I take a mental note of his wet/poopy diapers though, so I know he's getting enough to eat while nursing.

  • I hated when they had me keep track of breastfeeding and bowel movements in the hospital.  There's no way I'd do it at home unless there was a problem with weight gain.
  • I think I only did it for a few days or a week or so at the most with DS. I will probably pay more attention to the # of poopy and wet diapers this time, since I'll be breastfeeding instead of bottle. Last time I was paying more attention to mililiters and ounces instead.

Another thing I might do this time is to keep a food journal for myself for a while. That way in case I notice issues with gas, spitting up, etc. I can try to figure out if it might be due to something in my diet I could eliminate.

That is a great idea. I'm totally going to start that!

  • Yep - I kept a notebook.

I'd write the time - then pee, poop or feed.  Then I'd write L for left breast and how many mninutes and then R for right breast for how many minutes.

This also helped me keep track of which boob to start the baby on.

  • I use an app but only for breast feeding, she poops and pees like crazy so i don't log that info, and only bc DD lost almost a lb and the pedi was concerned she hadn't gained enough back after one.

She was back to birth weight today at two weeks so I'll probably relax on the tracking and just follow her cues now. But the apps are nice if you want to track.

With my first, I totally went the OCD route and recorded every poop/pee: what it looked like, when it happened, and which side I BFed him on, for how long, and what hold I had used. Then, his pedi said nurses/hospitals make a big deal out of it, but it really doesn't matter. So long as baby has so many dirth/wet diapers, and is gaining weight, and as long as there is no blood in the diaper, it mattered very little so keeping track was basically pointless. As crazy as I was about keeping track (pen/paper journal, even at 3am), it was an easy project to scrap and I haven't looked back since!
  • I did for the first 3 days, more becasue I couldn't remember anything 5 minutes after it happened and I lost all cognition of time... once those first few days were over I stopped writing it down.... i tracked what time I fed, what diapers had in them and what time I pumped and what meds I was taking and I would set up each days log with notes about what visitors or appointments were happening that day... it also helped my BF and I stay on the same page as far as what/who/why.... I think I stopped because the Pediatrician said everything was going OK so I trusted my gut from then on....

  • I did this with DD for the first week to 3 weeks....just until we had breastfeeding down pat and her jaundice was gone.  Just wanted to make sure she was getting enough and that she was getting the good hindmilk and not just the foremilk.  It made me feel better to see it all on paper and see that our routine was working.

This too.  I forgot my little journal consisted of which breast she started or finished on and how long on each.  Also, she lost 10% of her weight in the first week so that's another reason I was tracking closely.

  • Cu does way more than three poops a day and his diaper is always wet. My game plan has just been to notice that this is the case and take note when I haven't seen him poop in a while.

Like yesterday, I was on alert because he didn't poop in the afternoon. He did in the morning and then I was on alert. And lo and behold, he let out like three more at night.

So I just don't worry unless I have a reason to be concerned. No apps or journals for me, but as always, whatever makes you feel most comfortable is what you should go with. And don't get stressed if keeping up with the journal/app proves to be too much with a newborn. Just keep an open eye and mind about it.

  • Thanks everybody for the answers! It seems to be pretty split with what people find best, so I guess I will just have to see what works best for me! I may do it for the first week or so, and see where it goes! I'm sure that having a NB will make it hard to keep track, was just wondering how all you mommies/mommies to be were planning on doing it.

  • We did it for a few days while having issues with jaundice but I got sick of remembering to do it at 4 in the morning and trying to write in the dark.

  • I use an app called total baby. There is no way I could mentally keep track of anything and while the diaper thing reallyisnt a big deal, for me keeping track of when I last fed and on what side is a huge help! Its nice to be able to see patterns that ds is starting to follow with eating it helps you anticipate when the next will be.
