Pregnant after 35

A good problem to have

About two months ago, my health insurance company called. I was sure they were going to give me c*** about something, but they actually wanted to check that I was expecting and ask me if I wanted to enroll in their free Healthy Pregnancy program. I said, sure, why not? After my intake interview, I got bumped to Case Management because I am sooooo old. Confused The manager there talked to me some more and said I would get my very own nurse who would call and check up on me periodically. I thought, hey, it's free and it's a good backup to my OB, so why not?

Fast forward to today, when "my" nurse Janet called me for the first time. After a very nice chat where we discovered we went to neighboring high schools, she said, "You are just in such good shape and having such a stable and problem-free pregnancy, if you don't mind, I'd like to take you off Case Management. Of course, you can always call us with any questions whenever you like, and if something crops up down the road like gestational diabetes or pre-eclampsia, of course we'll put you back on, but you are doing so well, you honestly don't need me." Ha! Stick out tongue I thumb my nose at AMA and every last iota of fear-mongering associated with it. I am 41 and too healthy for case management!!

Re: A good problem to have

  • Good for you!  However, I really do like case management.  She calls every few weeks and checks up on me.  It is a good opportunity for me to ask questions that I don't think of during my doctor visits and gives me lots of good resources.  So far we have talked about herbal teas, heated car seats, headaches, and breast feeding with implants.

  • That is awesome, I would feel great too!  I have also signed up for this but I haven't gotten the call from the nurse yet.  I was wondering if it would be helpful at all.

  • CountryGirl, there's still a 24-hour hotline I can call with any questions, and I can actually talk specifically to Janet if I call from 9-5, so I don't feel like I've been completely cut off. I haven't called the hotline yet for anything, but it's a good backup, and they can help me figure out whether the issue warrants a call to the OB.

  • You go, Healthy Mama, You!

My hospital unenrolled itself from our insurance company's Healthy Pregnancy Program. Because as a hospital, we don't want our employees to have healthy pregnancies. It's why nothing's covered, too, except the birth!

  • It feels good when you read this post that its not about negative old woman having a baby!  I too have insurance about the case management and am doing fine and was taken off for now because I show no problems.  Its good to have a nurse to talk to because when you are at the doctors office I do tend to forget some things and then I think about it when I go home but the nurse did give me her phone number and occasionally I do pick up the phone to ask her some things.  Bravo to all of us who are going through this.
