If you do drowsy but awake...

If you are putting your LO down drowsy but awake for naps, how long does it take them to fall asleep after you put them in?  N's timing varies, sometimes she is out within 15 minutes, other times it takes much longer.  I try to follow her cues and watch the clock, but I'm not sure if I'm missing the mark...

  • Usually Natalia rolls over and goes to sleep as soon as we put her in her crib.  Olivia, on the other hand, varies a lot.  Sometimes she goes right to sleep, other times - especially for naps - she stands up and plays with her mobile and will go to sleep 15 or so minutes later.  She never cries, though, so I just let her do her thing.

  • Sometimes, Aria will roll right over and go to sleep. Other times, she'll babble around in there for up to 20 minutes. As long as she's not crying, I leave her in her crib. If she cries for more than 10 minutes (or like 3 if she's hysterical?) I'll go get her.

Last night, for example, I laid her down and she babbled around for nearly 20 minutes before she fell asleep.

I don't expect her to fall asleep exactly the same way every night. I just make sure we do our routine the same way at the same time every night so that she knows it's bedtime. I've only had to go get her maybe once since she got used to the routine.

  • Usually 5 minutes or less, unless we are at my mom's or he has learned a new trick, which he then practices.  Does she go down at the same time every day? We're on a schedule, so I think when it's time he definitely knows it.

I usually don't go get him once I put him down.

  • With Lucia it varies.  Sometimes she falls asleep pretty quickly, other times its 20 or 30 minutes.  As long as she eventually falls asleep, I figure it's fine for her to have some alone play beforehand.  If I see a pattern of longer times (like 30 min for a couple of days), I think about pushing back the naptime.

  • It varies for us too, I guess it depends on how tired he is.  Sometimes it's immediate and he never budges when I lay him down.  Sometimes it's 15 minutes or so of rolling around, playing, and talking before he goes to sleep.

  • At night, he falls asleep right away.  For naps, he's usually asleep within 10-20 minutes.  If he's crying, I let him go for about 10 minutes before I go get him.  If he's playing, I just let him do his thing, and he eventually falls asleep.

  • I don't do anything by the clock, its by her cues.  I've wanted to switch to scheduled nap times at approx 9 and 1 but she wakes a different times every day, and I worry about an overtired baby waiting that long for the first nap.  I'm thinking maybe I should just bite the bullet and do it.  It would be nice to have things scheduled.  It may take a few days for her to adjust, but from what I have heard from friends this is a foolproof method and maybe she'll fall asleep better.

Having a schedule has definitely helped us. He gets up around 7 everyday; sometimes it's 730745, but that's as much as it varies. Naps are at 9 and 2. Bedtime at 8. The consistency has definitely helped us. Good luck!
