Storing frozen BM

I feel dumb for asking this, but how are you guys storing your frozen bags of BM?  I have a good set up in our freezer in the kitchen but my stash is getting bigger so I've had to start using the freezer in our basement. It's not a deep freeze, just your typical refrigerator with the freezer section on the top half.  I lay the bags flat to freeze so I can stack them either on top of each other or stand them up, but I'm struggling to figure out a way to store them where I can have the access to the oldest ones first.  So I was wondering what others do, there's probably some logical idea that I'm just not thinking of.

I have tried the trick of using a gift bag and cutting a hole in the side on the bottom, but it's too small already and my stash has outgrown the bag.

Re: Storing frozen BM

  • Just cut back on your pumping so you have less in the freezer.

I didn't like the gift bag method either.  I store 8 Lansinoh bags in one gallon-size ziploc bag.  I label the ziploc bags with the date range.

I EP, so right now I'm not ready to cut out any pumping sessions because I want to keep him on BM until he's at least 6 months, or maybe longer.  I send him to daycare with one bottle of BM and 3 frozen bags of BM and then I freeze 3 to 4 bags a day.

That's a great idea about putting them in a gallon size bag and then labeling that bag.  Thanks!

  • I have a bm storage tray for the freezer. I think it was ten dollars on amazon.

  • I freeze flat and then put them in a Gallon ziploc Baggie and also put the date range. I don't sort through the ziplock to get the oldest but they are all within the same month so I think it's fine.

I usually only put 1 oz of "old" milk in each of his 4 oz bottles when at daycare. So he's getting mostly fresh milk with a little old.

  • I freeze flat in laninosh bags. I then move those into a plastic container in my freezer. Once a month i Then put 15 of those into a gallon freezer bag. The small bags are all marked with date and the gallon is marked with date range. I then rotate the gallon bags in the freezer.

  • Much like pp's, I would freeze in Lansinoh bags flat, and then group them into a gallon size ziploc and write the month on that bag.  I think I could fit like 15-18 bags of 4 oz each in each ziploc.  then I stack them in our chest freezer in the basement.  I'm mostly into using, not freezing, mode now (at 14months I'm only pumping 1X a day at work...) but when I do freeze some I keep using this system.  Now, I just find the oldest ziploc bag to pull from, and bring a few 4 oz bags upstairs to our kitchen freezer to use during the week as I rotate my stash.

  • You can still do the gift bag method if your milk fills more than one bag. You can get multiple bags. That's what I do.
