NBR: Disturbing fact of the day.

I was on the phone to VISA and they asked me some security questions and they happened to be about my mortgage.  What bank I was with, how often I pay and how much is my payment.  I told them the bank and the date and the amount before after taxes.  I didn't know the exact number but I knew to within a couple of dollars.  The guy on the phone said, "Good job!!  I would say more than half of my customers don't know what bank their mortgage is with, let alone how much they pay and when.  So well done!!"  I was embarrassed that I didn't know the exact amount and then I was horrified by what he told me.

How do people not know the basic information about their mortgage? It's pretty crucial information to have.  No wonder there are so many people over their heads in debt.

  • I always pay more than what is due, so I don't know the exact amount, but I have a general idea. I also know what bank, because it's been underwritten and sold twice since we bought our house only 5 years ago!

  • I pay a little more than our mortgage amount every month so I am not sure the exact amount, but I know within $5 or so.  MH would probably not know though because I handle all the money.  So if MH had to answer those questions, he would probably be one of those people who got them wrong.

I know mine, but honesly, I could see how one COULD forget.  I have mine on autopay (easy to forget the payment amount) and I could easily have to strech my mind to remember the name of the bank as it's not a common name like Wells Fargo or Bank of America.
  • I pay all of the bills including the mortgage. I am sure that DH has no idea what our mortgage is or any other bill for that matter!

  • We overpay for our mortgage every month. I have no idea what the actual amount due technically is. But I can tell you exactly what we pay monthly! Maybe the people who don't know just are not the "bill person" in their house? Every household seems to have one person in charge of the bills. It's really not a two person job. But the second person should have SOME idea of how much the bills are in general...
