IUD Ladies

Have you had any problems with it?  I am currently on the pill now and am hating it.  I called my OB/GYN yesterday and she thinks that I would really like the IUD.  She is supposed to call back with how much it will cost.

Did you have a lot of spotting?  Any pain during insertion?

Re: IUD Ladies

  • I have the Paragard IUD. It has no hormones, has been on the market longer than Mirena, and can stay inserted longer than Mirena (ten years as opposed to five). I had no pain having it inserted. I had mild cramping and spotting afterwards for a couple of days, but it wasn't anything that Tylenol couldn't fix. I have some slight spotting every now and then but nothing much. I really like it.

  • I have had the ParaGard IUD (non-hormonal) for about a month and so far I love it!  I had spotting for the first two weeks, it was really light and I just used a liner.  I was afraid for my first period because the ParaGard IUD can make your period 50-75% heavier, but I got my period last week and it wasn't that bad at all.  It was heavier but not that bad and it was still only 4 days (normal for me) so it didn't make it any longer.  Insertion was also not a big deal for me, it wasn't painful only mildly uncomfortable and took less than five minutes!
  • i have paragard,  and it hurt like a mother during insertion.  i'm on my first period since insertion, and it is lighter and less cramping.  just a week of light spotting after placement, no big deal.  it was about $120 after insurance paid their part.
  • also have Paragard and I LOVE it.  Insertion hurt for like 2 seconds, I was a touch crampy the rest of the day and I lightly spotted for about 4 days.  Period ([ve only had one) was normal, no longer, heavier or crampier.  It was expensive because we are paying OOP (stupid insurance...) but it's worth every penny.
  • I have the Mirena IUD and I like it so far. It was a little uncomfortable having it put in but nothing I couldn't handle. I haven't had my period yet, but I'm also BF. I have a bunch of friends that have it as well and their periods are either non existant or very short and light.

  • I've had the Paraguard twice (just got it back, about one year exactly since I took it out).

First time, it hurt hidesouly going in. This time, it was nothing. I don't know if it was having a child that made a difference, or if it can just be different, different times. I've no cramping this time either. If you do get it, don't be discourged the first few months. I had much heavier cycles than normal the first time, with worse cramping. However, each period was easier than the last, and I was back to normal within 6 months.

I love the IUD. Almost foolproof birthcontrol you never have to think about. With Paraguard, it's instantly reversible as well. (We are proof of that...Howver, be aware that that is not the case with Mirena)
