Would this be rude?

I have really been wanting to get DS a train table for either Christmas or his birthday, which fall within the same week.  He is obsessed with trains and would play on the floor models at the toy store for hours if I let him.

However, my MIL and step-MIL have told us at least 5 times over the last year "make sure you don't buy him a train table, [DH's brother and SIL] have one they want to give to you because their kids are done with it." We don't really talk to this BIL/SIL, they live about 10 hours away so the only way for it to get to us would be for either set of DH's parents to bring it back with them when they go visit.

Would it be rude of us to a) ask about the train table and whether someone is able to bring it to us anytime soon or b) just buy him one ourselves?  I don't mind buying one but don't want to hear grief from his family.

This would probably be a non-issue in a family that was close/comfortable, they're just an odd lot.

  • I'd just buy it.  Ours was bought off craigslist and all assembled it was awkward enough to get in my suv.  Not worth a 10 hour drive to me.

  • I would just buy one. It will be a pain to disassemble it or to try and fit it into a truck or SUV already assembled. That's sweet of them to want to pass it on to you, but it's 10 hours away...that's kind of crazy IMO.
  • Definitely just buy it. It's a nice thought on their parts, but impractical.
  • Buy it.  From what you describe, the BIL/SIL themselves didn't even offer it to you, so who knows if they are even aware that you are expecting it from them.  It's not worth the 10 hour trip for it anyway- between time, effort, and gas prices you can buy a new one.

  • I would just buy a train table.  If they lived close by and they had offered it to you themselves it would be a different story. 10 hour drive is not worth it.  Plus you haven't seen it for yourselves, so how do you know what it still looks like after all this time.

  • Buy it. We're getting one for DS and what I've found is that if the kids liked trains at all, a used table gets pretty beat up.
