International Bumpies

intro

I had no idea there was now an international board, but am so glad there is. My fiance and I moved down to Brazil when I was 21 weeks. He is from here and I'm American. He has a great job and we figured it would be best for us financially to get started down here. I'm 35 weeks along and we are still waiting for our belongings to be released from the port down here, which includes everything for LO and her room. I have struggled with second guessing if this was right and considered going back to the US. I'm nervous about delivering in another country and as most of you know, when cravings strike for foods back home, they can't always be satisfied. I get homesick, but am sure it will pass. Anyone else been in this same boat? Are there any other Americans in South America on this board?

  • Hello!!!

I am in Spain with my Spanish DH. I hope you get your things really soon. Do you know where you are going to have your LO?

I did a hospital tour of the place where I am probably going to have my LO and it made me a feel a lot better after seeing the place. I am still a bit nervous about giving birth here because I am afraid that the day I have to give birth I am not going to remember how to speak Spanish and I am going to just want to speak English.

  • Hi and welcome. I'm a Brit living in Luxembourg with a Lux husband and DD. I've moved around most of my life so I'm sort of used to missing foods because no matter where I am I miss something from somewhere.

We are going today for our hospital tour. I feel the same way about speaking Portuguese during labor. I am hoping I will feel better after my hospital tour. Our doctor is great. He's private, so he makes a lot of time for us and I think he'll most likely be able to be with us throughout the whole labor, because most women here schedule c sections and we are trying to do this naturally and vaginally.

  • Welcome! I'm a Canadian living in the British Isles with my Canadian DH and our 3 yr old DS. Due in Jan with our 2nd.

So exciting that you are in Brazil. Have a friend being recruited for a job there so I am hearing a lot about it lately.

Have also heard that the c-section rate is something crazy like 80% - mostly because woman choose to have them. You'll have to tell us more about L&D there once your baby arrives.

  • Welcome! I'm an American living in Germany with my German DH. It's great that you found a doctor who's willing to work with you for a vaginal birth in a country with such a high c/s rate, and I also agree that the L&D tour *should* help you feel a little more relaxed since it will take away some of the unknowns. Here's to hoping that your stuff gets released in time!! But also remember that at the beginning, there's very little your LO will really need other than your boobs (if you're BFing), a few changes of clothes, and a place to sleep - and for that, they're usually happiest on your chest or in your arms! Everything else is an optional luxury and can be added later.

BFP1: DD1 born April 2011 at 34w1d via unplanned c/s due to HELLP, DVT 1 week PP
    BFP2: 3/18/12, blighted ovum, natural m/c @ 7w4d
BFP3: DD2 born Feb 2013 at 38w4d via unplanned RCS due to uterine dehiscence

  • I am an American living in Denmark with my American hubby.  The first time I delivered here, I brought a Danish friend with me just in case something happened, and they stopped speaking English and started speaking Danish, she could translate.  It made me feel more in control.

Good luck in Brazil!  It sounds like an amazing experience!

This is true! But we would like to be settled in our own place before she comes! Plus we need our car seat, breast pump... All our belongings like kitchen appliances and what not are in there too! We are living with my ILs and we are just ready to be on our own. But you're right.

Hi and welcome. I'm an American living in the UK, and DH and I are expecting our first child in May. I'm with you on the food cravings. All I want are goldfish crackers, and they are nowhere to be found!

Try ASDA - they're called Finz, and our local one up north carried themfor about a year. No more sadly...

Although it looks like they only have a huge size available right now.

It's where I get canned pumpkin and big bottles of Frank's Red Hot Sauce. Yes, a rip off compared to US/CDN prices but sometimes it's worth it.

  • welcome to the board :)

I hope your stuff arrives soon

We have 1 person who's in Columbia on the board, I think that's it for SA

  • Hi and welcome :) I am an American living in Scotland with my American DH and 11 month old DD.  I can understand your wanting to just have your things.  I could not wait for our shipment to arrive because it made me feel more at "home"

I hope your tour at the hospital went well and I look forward to hearing about beautiful, sunny Brazil :) We might be there in a couple of years....it is one of the areas that DH's company has interest in and the technology that they would like to implement there is what DH specialises in :)

  • Welcome!  I'm an American living in Germany with my Spanish DH.  We were in Spain before this and just moved about 6 months ago.  Adjusting is hard and I can't imagine not having our things!  I hope they arrive soon.
