4 oz baby bottles?

Sorry to be a PW today. Clearly, I'm updating my registry today...

I've read before that people avoid getting 4 oz baby bottles because the kids don't eat 4 oz for very long and it's kind of wasteful. Is that a MoM thought too? Would you just fill a regular 9 oz bottle with only 4 oz then?

Thanks again ladies!

Re: 4 oz baby bottles?

  • We bought 5oz Tomee Tippee bottles and still use them occasionally. We recently bought the 9oz size. You could definitely skip the 4-5oz size, but I found that many don't start measurement lines until 2oz.

Also, the big 9 oz bottles looked ridiculous next to our tiny babies at first!

  • We got 4 oz bottles and I don't regret it. I think it will be awhile before the babies are taking over 4 ounces (especially our baby girl as we're struggling to get her to take a full ounce at each feeding right now).

When DS was 8 months old, he stopped nursing and we switched to formula. At that time he took full 8 oz bottles, but in the afternoon he only ever seemed interested in 4 ounces. I used to use the smaller bottles for that feeding since I had them on hand anyway.

  • I didn't regret buying the smaller sized Born Free bottles at all.  We used then for months before switching to the 9 oz bottles.  They were just easier to deal with when my son was small and eating 5 oz or less.  I plan on getting more for the twins.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • Ok! Looks like I'll add 4 oz bottles. It must be non-multiple moms who want to skip the little bottles.
  • I had both in the beginning, and don't regret having the 4oz btl. I keep 2 4oz btl in the diaper bag with formula in it in case I get stuck out and the kids are hungry. I keep a 3rd 4oz btl for water in the diaper bag.

  • Yes, I would skip them...spend your money on bigger bottles that you can use longer.  My trips are 4.5 months old and we have been through with them for almost 2 months. We spent 20 days in the nicu, so they hardly got used.  They are formula fed and always have been...if that matters.

I got the 4 oz bottles at a consignment sale because they were cheaper and to just fill in because I knew when they came home they would be on a 3 hour feeding schedule, which meant 24 bottles a day.  To avoid dishes everyday we had about 40 bottles in the beginning.

  • We only had 5 oz Tommee Tippee bottles for the babies.  We also used the same kind for DD1 and she never ate more than 5 oz at a feeding.  But she was BF'd.  Most BF'd babies don't increase the amount they eat as they get bigger after like 4 months old, your BM changes to be appropriate for their age.  I started supplementing with formula when the babies were 6 months old and they were on formula completely by the time they were 9 months old.  We had to buy the 9 oz bottles for them because they were eating 7-8 oz per feeding at one point.

  • They were a waste for us. My DS started eating 5+ oz around 6 weeks old so we had to switch. We also switched types of bottles. I started out with glass Evenflo bottles and those were so leaky and the nipple collapsed so badly that we moved to Dr. Brown's. To do it again, I'd just use the 8oz Dr. B's.

  • I registered for both 4 oz and 9 oz of playtex drop-ins.  Not very earth friendly, but less dish washing with the little time we will have.

  • I definitely wish I hadn't wasted my money on 4-5oz bottles.  Mine were done with them after just a month or so.  HTH!

  • I knew to skip them from my older kids and have NO regrets skipping them with my twins too.  The babies were eating more than 4 ounces at a feeding by 2 months. I used Avent bottles and they have indicators starting at 1 oz. (maybe 1/2 an ounce?) They are also much better for pumping into if you have a good supply. With the Avent you need an adapter ring but not all do. And I didn't expect to be pumping at all really but that's just how it worked out in the end.

  • I liked the 5oz breastflow bottles :)  So, maybe get a few 4oz to help find out what kind you like :D)
