2.5yo DS had a 103.3 fever last night before bed. We gave him tylenol and cuddled with him while he slept. He woke up a bit in the middle of the night and we gave more medicine. When he woke up today his fever was down to 100.8. Since he is responding to the tylenol and seems a bit more himself today I haven't called the Dr. MIL thought it was odd I didn't make an appointment, but last time I did (last year) they said to wait 48hrs with a fever so I figured I'd follow the same advice.
So, when does your pedi advise you call regarding a fever? Should I be taking him in earlier? I just didn't think there would be anything they can do...he's not really showing any other symptoms other than being lethargic.
Re: When to take to pedi for a fever?
i'm with you. he responded to the meds, it's only been a day. if the temp goes up again, i might reconsider but otherwise, i'd give it another day or so since he's acting like himself but tired (which is to be expected with a fever). hope he feels better soon!

Same here.
I think doctors are taking a more 'wait and see' approach as opposed to when we were kids and they would pump us full of antibiotics at the first sign of anything. My MIL and mom who was a pediatric nurse are both shocked at how easy going I am when it comes to fevers and illnesses. But it's because that is always the reaction of the doctor's office when I call. I've only taken DD to two sick appointments, but she has been sick more than that. It just takes time to get better that's all.
If he seems relatively OK other than having a fever I wouldn't take him in. If he became super lethargic and wasn't drinking fluids that would be a different story (or if he wasn't eating and his throat was all red). Otherwise personally I don't even worry about it for 3-4 days. DD had a high fever for 4 days this past summer without really any other symptoms. I figured it was something like roseola but she never got a rash. The fever subsided after 4 days and that was it.
Look at your LO, if he is drinking fluids/peeing and seems OK (other than a bit off because of the fever) just treat the fever and monitor. If he gets worse all of a sudden or is refusing liquids he should be seen. Viruses can cause high fevers but nothing can be done about them unless it is influenza, if you have any suspicion it might be influenza he should be seen because he would need to be treated within 48 hours for the meds to be helpful at all.
