Kinda going crazy.

Too much sh*t is going on in my life and I can't seem to handle it all. It is making me crazy. I feel like I may burst and say/do something inappropriate.

I can't get a real job. I have a teaching degree and it is hard to get a teaching job in the school district. I'm subbing and making very little money. Subbing is the way to get a job. I thought I was going to get a long term sub job, but I didn't. I'm losing patience with this process. I also have a second job, but I still don't make enough.

I have a ton of debt and since I'm making crap money, I can't pay it down fast enough.

My debt and crap income (DH doesn't make much either) make it so we can't get a house. We are crammed into a 2 bedroom condo and rent for a three bedroom is about $1,200/month; way out of our price range.

So I believe that I am stuck. I am a huge believer of improving your life where needed, but I can't find a way to do so. I am driving myself crazy thinking of ways to get out, but always come up with nothing.

I also have a health issue where I need to get a regular check up on every part of my body annually. But I can't get private insurance due to the health issue being a pre-existing condition. Insurance is not available through employment. So I have no idea if I'm doing well health wise. Scares the crap out of me and I know that it is completely irresponsible of me to not be on top of my health for the sake of my children and husband.

There is no real point to this post. Just venting. Thanks for "listening".

Re: Kinda going crazy.

  • I'm sorry, it sounds like you are going through a really crummy time.  I know what you mean about getting a teaching job.  I've only had 'replacement contracts', where it is only good for a year.  It is SO frustrating, especially after going through all of the schooling.  There has to be more school districts around you than just one, right?  Are you subbing in as many as you can?  Also, get yourself on the 'preferred' sub list, the principal can put you on that.  Hopefully someone can get knocked up soon so that you can have the long term job.  What about other opportunities?  One year I couldn't get a 'teaching' job, so I did what was called 'extended learning opportunity' where I was on a cart going from classroom to classroom with small groups of kids.  I'm sure that you are checking those school district's websites daily for opportunities.

Also, since your debt to income ratio is so high, can you go to one of those clinics with a sliding fee scale?  That is not right that you don't have a right to medical care due to the preexisting condition.  Maybe talk to your old Dr. and see if they take patients on a sliding fee scale?

(((Hugs))) I know that it is frustrating when you are doing all of the right things, and things aren't going the 'right' way.  I'm sorry, I hope that this turns around soon.

  • I am in the preferred sub list at a few schools. The one school that I am always at has several pregnant teachers. One of them is due in a few weeks. That is the long term that I didn't get.
There are other districts but the pay is nearly half of that of the district that I have my eye on. I know I shouldn't be picky, but with my debt I feel like I should try for the bigger district. But I have put out applications for other districts and waiting for responses.

My health issue can be life threatening and I need to be seen by specialists. I actually have had a few cancer scares. I had my large intestine removed seven years ago due to my condition. I have a team of doctors that are aware of my financial issues and charge me less. But it is still too expensive to see all the specialists yearly.

I'm not a bold person so maybe I haven't spoken up enough to get more help or to get a job? I don't know.

Thanks for your responses. It means a lot to me.

You are the only one who can toot your own horn.  No one is going to do it for you.  That is advice that I've gotten from veteran teachers.  Good luck!  BTW, I'm sorry about your health issues.

  • I, too understand where you're coming from. I subbed/coached for a district then got hired as an Ed Tech (paraprofessional in some states), then applied for every teaching position available and kept getting looked over. after 5 years making crap pay I chose a different avenue, which didn't pan out, and now am going back to school to change careers. It's a sh!tty deal. I don't have much advice because I just wasn't patient enough to wait, and financially we're in the same situation. I hope a big job opens up soon for you. I'm sorry about your health issues too. I would ask at the doc's office (even if they're giving you a reduced rate) to be able to pay your bill on a sliding scale at manageable payments.  Good luck to you, hoping for big things soon!!!

  • I am sorry for your current situation.

Does your husband have insurance through his job??

have you considered looking for jobs outside of teaching at this point?  I know there are tons of professional jobs that require a BA degree, but they don't have to be in a specific field.  I work in insurance and my degree is in psychology.

  • I am sorry you are going through this.

Have you looked into whether you qualify for The Pre-existing Condition Insurance Plan under Obamacare? https://www.pcip.gov/

Insurance is not offered at his job since he is part time. We are hoping that a full time position opens soon though.

I've have thought about giving up and moving on job wise. I think I should keep subbing this school year and apply all over in the spring. If I don't get a teaching job for next year, then I will move on.

KarinThank you so much for that link. I thought that benefit from Obamacare didn't start until 2014. Thank you.
  • No problem! I hope it helps.

I think this is something seperate from what is going to happen in 2014. As in I think this is a special program that the government set up for the interm but then in 2014 all insurance companies have to do it. But I am not entirely sure. Hopefully it helps!

It's sad that our country can't keep good teachers, isn't it?  Good luck at whatever you choose to do.

  • My goodness! I'm so sorry for your situation.

With your debt, I'm not sure where you stand, and what type of debt you have.

I have  a friend who was going to file for bankruptcy and I talked her out of it.  Instead she called all of the places she owed money and said:  "I know I owe you X amount of dollars but all I have is Y. yada yada yada"  Most places settled with her for much less than she owed.  A lot of her bills were medical/hospital and I think she had some random credit cards.  Now she only had 14k in debt but she also was working really low paying jobs.  I think she settled for 6k.

I'll be thinking about you and hoping a great job comes your way soon.  Maybe one of those teachers will want to be a SAHM and you can snag their job.

  • I am so sorry that you are going through a lot and having a rough time. In regard to your debt, maybe you could go see a credit counselor (a reputable non-profit one), and have them help you with your debt? I am also very sorry about your medical condition and I hope you will be able to get insurance soon that will cover your health expenses. I agree with PP that it may be better to look into other jobs at least temporarily until you can find a permanent teaching position. I wish you the very best of luck!
