Breastfeeding

tubular breasts

Hi Ladies,

I am very close to having my second baby (39 weeks). I was told that I had underdeveloped tubular breasts when I was 18. I decided to have a breast augmentation which has been wonderful for my self esteem. With my first daughter I was completely overwhelmed and quit breast feeding after 10 days because I had so little milk when I pumped. The hospital had me supplement so that quickly became routine. Has anyone with tubular breasts has success breast feeding? I would really like to try again and not give up so quickly. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Re: tubular breasts

  • Whether or not you will be able to produce sufficient milk to EBF will depend on what surgery you had.  Typically for tubular breast deformity, we do an augmentation with a peri-areolar incision with radial scoring of the breast parenchyma along with a peri-areolar mastopexy.  The mastopexy (of this type) and augmentation will be unlikely to cause a milk production problem, but the radial scoring may as you cut through the breast tissue to release it and correct the deformity.  It will depend on what surgery you had done and how much breast tissue you have.  Don't lose hope, you will likely be able to produce some milk even if you had a large amount of scoring and those antibodies are so valuable to your LO.  It's common to have little/no milk at first when you pump.  I don't have supply issues and I pumped like nothing at first.  I think lots of women freak themselves out by pumping too early and expecting a lot of output.  Give it a go and don't stress yourself out with early pumping if you don't have to.  Find an LC and keep in close contact with weighed feedings if you or your pedi are worried.  Good luck and congrats on getting ready to meet your little one!
