Scout?

My daughter got Scout, that leapfrog dog toy, for her 1st birthday. We already have the Fisher Price Laugh and Learn puppy, and she's not in love with it really. Should I return Scout or hang on to him? He is still in his box and she'll play with him for a few minutes but I think she's more interested in the packaging...

Just wondering if this is something they get into as they get older or if it's most popular before a year?

Re: Scout?

  • While I personally don't have any experience with Scout, I can attest to the fact that my son received a handful of toys for his 1st birthday and even last Christmas that he seemingly had no interest in. I kept some of them out and put others away in his closet for another day and many of them ended up being some of his favorites.

Sorry I couldn't give more specific advice!

  • My DD has Violet.. The girl version of Scout. She loves it so much that I had to go buy another one. One stays in her crib, and one she takes everywhere with her.

IMO, it's a better toy when you take it out of the box and personalize it. You can add your favorite songs such as patty cake, Old McDonald, etc. Add your childs favorite food and color, and even add your child's name. You don't get the jist of Scout when you leave him in the box. Lol.

  • Which one is Scout, the purple puppy or the green frog-looking thing?  DD1 got both for, I think, her 1st birthday.  She liked both for a while but she favored the purple puppy and now so do the babies.  I haven't heard the green frog thing talk in forever.

  • My younger brother got my twins Violet and Scout for their 1st birthday.  We were able to find DS's name (Slade) on their list, but unfortunately (and not surprisingly), they didn't have DD's name (Kyplee)...so we just had to spell it out on there for her.  They are just now getting to where to actually play with them and squeeze their hands and feet.  Before, they just lugged them around...but they are really neat if you can actually personalize it to say their name...

Scout is the green puppy, the "boy" version of Violet, but we do have a girl :-)

  • scout's been a favorite of my LO since he was very young. he's 11.5 months now and still beams when he catches sight of scout. he is just now learning how to get him to "talk" and "sing" but loves the songs. scout always pronounces his name as a question which drives me batty, but my son doesn't seem to mind.

I had both pups for DD as well, the Laugh n Learn first though. She didn't start really playing or paying attention to Violet until recently when she knows what buttons will lead her to what - she likes her alot now! It might be an age thing.

  • You've heard enough positives, but LO got Violet as a gift for her 1st birthday and loves it. So cute how it says her name and plays such fun music. You can switch it up and put different music on it so it will never get old. Great gift to give and to receive!!

All of this. I don't have the Laugh and Learn to compare to the Violet/Scout, but it's a really awesome, interactive toy. My kid has been playing with it daily for at least the past 6 months.

  • We have the Violet dog. Natalie LOVES her. Violet says her name and her favorite animal and color and food etc. There is a song that Violet spells out "Natalie" and that is one of her favorites. If I were you, I would keep Scout. (Or return Scout and get a violet because I think Violet is cuter :P) It is a toy that your little one will really be able to grow with, at least for a few years.

ETA: I go to 2nd hand stores frequently and in every store I have seen at least one, if not more or the L&L puppies. I'm not saying it's a bad toy but I've never seen a Violet or Scout. I think it probably has to do with the personalization factor.

  • Give it some time.  DS thought he was cool while in the box.  We finally pulled it out to let him play with it once he was about 12m and he couldn't care less about it.  Now, at 15m, he's showing interest in it.  I like that I can change it's programming to keep it more "fresh."

  • Sold ladies :-) I think we will keep it....seems like it will be more fun as she gets older. I kind of wish we had the purple one, but I'm ok with the green...nice to have it gender neutral in case we have a second kid and it's not another girl!

  • We don't have the FP one so I can't compare, but DS got Scout for his bday this past Saturday and we all love him. I like that he's programmable. It took about two days for DS to warm up to him, and now he gives him kisses and carries him around all over the house. DS thinks it's pretty cool that Scout knows his name and the songs he's already used to hearing me sing. I think this makes Scout more engaging than a lot of other less personal interactive toys.

  • My DD has Violet and loves it. She got it for her first birthday and she can now sing her spelling of her name along with Violet. She also sings pretty much every song that I have right now on Violet. I just love the fact that it sings her name.

  • DS got Scout for Christmas last year at 7 months and he's just now (around 17 months) playing with him.  But Scout has now turned into one of his favorite toys, though!  He loves him.
