XP from PgAL: Q for STM+...tearing or episiotomy?

Did you tear or require an episiotomy with your 2nd (or more) child?

I had an episiotomy with my 1st, though I didn't want to. I don't know if it was truly necessary or if the doctor was just episiotomy-happy. By the end of my pregnancy I really just thought he was a jerk. When I wanted to discuss my birth plan at my 32w appt. he just kind of chuckled. When I told him I preferred to avoid an episiotomy his response was, "Well, almost all FTM need one". Indifferent Needless to say he is not my current OB.

That episiotomy was honestly the worst part of my recovery. Sad

  • I had a 2nd degree tear with DD (my first) - not because she was big (she actually has a teeny head) but because she crowned & came out so darn fast. This time, with DS, I had a small tear that only needed 2 stitches. It was sore but not nearly as sore as the first time.

Hope you have a better recovery this time around - is your new OB less episiotomy-happy?

ETA: I meant to add, I haven't lurked on PgAL as much lately so I haven't seen updates, but it's so good to see your LO still cooking!

  • I tore with both babies, and with Raylan it was med free and the tearing and stitches were so not a big deal compared to everything else.  My mom had two babies with episiotomies and one she tore ( all med free) and she swears the episiotomy was better, but who knows!  I really don't think the tearing was a huge deal for me either time.

  • I had a 3rd degree tear with my first and a small episiotomy with my second.  The episiotomy was so much better, but I'm guessing it's because my incision was much smaller than my tear.

  • I had an episiotomy with my first and recovery was awful. I tore slightly with DS and recovery was a breeze in comparison. I had first degree and minor second degree with DS

  • No tearing with either kiddos. I was kinda shocked I didn't with W as I had a five hour labor and about 5 mins of pushing. He kinda popped out. And after the shock of him being there I asked the MW if I was still in one piece down there. I almost didn't believe her when she told me I was good. Em was 8 7 when she was born and W was 8 15 so even with a faster harder labor and larger kid I had no tearing.
