Girl's flower names

Which name do you like best?

Maylea, pronounced "Mah lay uh"
Hanna
Kalina, pronounced "Kah lee nah"

Re: Girl's flower names

  • I have never heard of any flowers by those names lol but hey I also couldn't keep a cactus alive.

I don't like Maylea at all... strange spelling. Better if it was Malia? Maybe...

Hate the name Hanna/Hannah... very bad name associations

I guess that would leave me picking Kalina, which I actually kind of like anyway.

  •  I don't think of any of those as flower names, but I like Hannah best. Other two sound made up.

  • They all mean flower/ Hanna is flower in Japanese, maylea is wildflower in Hawaiian. mj, you are correct on the pronunciation but my DH has been pronouncing it "layuh" and I like the sound of it better. It's pretty but would always be spelled wrong I'm sure!

    1. Really dislike. I would never pronounce Maylea /mah-LAY-uh/. The "may" makes a long "a" sound. I would assume it was /may-LEE-uh/. And from a little research, it looks like /may-LEE-uh/ is the correct pronunciation. Hawaiian; meaning?resembling wild flower.

If you want the "mah" sound, there is the Hawaiian name Malia /mah-LEE-uh/ (like Obama's daughter).

    2. Hanna/Hannah is really nice. But as far as I know it is not a flow name?

    3. HATE Kalina. I grew up with one and she was a complete b.itch. Still is. Nice meaning, though (rowan tree in Bulgarian/Macedonian).

Thats all well and good that your H is mispronouncing something. But if you name your daughter Maylea, and expect people to say it the way you're describing, you're going to be disappointed.

    Ditto.

  • Not Maylea, especially not with that pronunciation.  Hana (as mentioned before, with the proper Japanese pronunciation) is nice to me, but she will be forever correcting people.  Hannah would be more convenient.  I'm in the minority in that I like Kalina.
