Maybe a stupid question...

but bear with me here.  OK, still reading that UO thread.  I'm constantly hearing people say, "health care is a right".  However, in order for there to be health care, there have to be doctors.  Many people I know who would have become doctors are no longer considering med school because doctor's salaries are going down considerably and they don't want to deal with a lot of the stresses that have been piled onto the profession.  So, let's just hypothetically say that no one went to med school any more and there were no more doctors.  Well then, how are we going to get our "right" to health care when there is no one to provide it?

Re: Maybe a stupid question...

  • That was one of the reasons behind MH not applying to medical school/PA school. I think access to health care is a right but I think that is a separate issue from health insurance. Part of the issue I feel is how litigious people are and I also think that people are being overly cared for which is in some cases their own fault for not researching and advocating for themselves and for often demanding unnecessary medical testing.

Don't we already do that? Our pedi is a caucasion woman raised in this area, our optometrist is third generation in his practice and my OBGYN is first generation born in the US, her father was from Korea and was my moms GYN until he retired. Every single other doctor or specialist we see including our dentist is from another country. That seems to be pretty typical where I live.

Yes, its common around here too, especially with nurses from other countries.

  • Not everyone goes to med-school for the salary.

There's never going to be a time when we don't have doctors.

Ancient tribes had medicine men, and they didn't get paid, it was just their role in the community.

ETA: One could make the same argument about teachers.  Awful salary, high stress, and very little respect.  And yet I don't see a shortage of teachers anywhere.

  • Blu, I'm being hypothetical here. My point is, how can something be a right when it depends on someone else providing a service.

You can apply that to anything though. How can you be happy without the things that make you happy? Are they all self generated or do they come from someone else? Liberty also depends on the government.

  • I'm reluctant to comment on a topic I don't have all the facts on, but I do want to say that I live in a country under national health care and we have doctors coming out the azz, so they must be doing something right. I swear there's a specialist on every corner and they're second in number only to hair salons. I doctor hop all the time, just because I can. And feel I must since by god I'm paying for it, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Privatized health care scares me.

  • My opinion (which I know is an unpopular one, especially around here) is that it isn't a right.  You have 3 rights:  life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  I don't see health care fitting in to that.  My friends that believe it is a right (we have agreed to disagree) claim that health care is tied to the right to life in some way.  I, personally, disagree.  The US Constitution was written so that there was a very limited government.  The founding fathers didn't want to break free from a powerful and oppressive government just to form a new similar one here.
