We had the worst radiologist on the planet yesterday. She was defensive and rude from the moment she walked into the room (after I layed there for 35 mins all gooed up waiting for her). She kept mixing the babies up, and then was rude when I corrected her, even though I was obviously right. She was visibly sloppy when taking measurements of the babies. And then, as she strutted out the door, tossed an "Oh, there is a pretty significant size discordance between the identicals" and poof, was gone. What. The. Eff. We drive over an hour to the city for care because its supposedly the best in the country, and we get a rude ass B for an u/s whose information I do not trust.
Luckily our MFM is the coolest guy, and we do trust him completely. He talked to us about their weights, which were 1.5lbs and 1.25lbs for the boys, and 1.35 for the fraternal girl. MFM is not overly concerned since fluid, dopplers, and everything else look great. But I'm back up to weekly monitoring for the time being to be sure the size discordance doesn't mean something more significant/ become bigger.
My question for you ladies, esp triplets/ ID gals, is this: Do you remember what your babies weights were at 24-25w? Did you have a size discordance and did it mean anything other than differently sized babies at birth? I guess I'm just looking for a little reassurance that this isn't a big deal. This is the first time the babies have measured anything other than normal. I don't even know if I trust the info since the radiologist was so obviously sloppy and incompetent.
If you read this whole thing, you deserve a treat.
TIA for any insight you have for me.
Re: Frustrating appt~ weights at 24w? (long)
Just, Wow.
I am sorry I can't offer you any advice because I am only 11wks with my trips- but I would be SO infuriated!
I mean, I'm sure you are already anxious; but then to have what sounds like rushed, incomplete care is so frustrating.
I think I would call and ask to speak with the girl's manager- because not only are you trying to get the best care for your babies; you are also being charged a lot of money for this crummy care... I don't know- I guess I am just mad for you.
Take it easy and try not to worry- (impossible I know) Thinking of you!
My boys were 2 lb. and 1lb. 13 oz. at my 25w u/s, along with a 5% growth discordance. They have been consistently a few days to a week ahead though.
They are monitoring the growth discordance % as an indicator of TTTS since my boys are *thought* to be Mo/Di. My MFM has told me that they don't start to worry until you hit 20% or higher but that is the whole point of why they are monitoring my boys' growrth discordance based upon my understanding.
Ugh. So frustrating! I had an MFM who fell asleep during one of my ultrasounds. That was my last visit with him! Ugh.
At 24w5d, the boys were:
1 lb 8 oz (41st)
1 lb 9 oz (51st)
1 lb 13 oz (61st)
And they were considered concordant. I'm not good enough at math to tell you what the size difference between A and C was, but it got a lot bigger, and even then they never worried about it. (All shared a placenta.)

Thank you PeaKay, this is reassuring- the difference between your A and C is about what my IDs are now. Good to hear it was never cause for concern, and obviously your boys are fine. I dont think I would be as stressed about it if I trusted what the radiologist saw, but it was just such a shiitshow yesterday that my sense of unease is exaggerated.

Transferred 2 "perfect" 8-cell embies 6/12. Beta 1 6/25: 472! Beta 2 6/27: 1055!
First u/s shows TRIPLETS! WHAT?!?! Both embies stuck and one split. OMG
Levi, Henry, and Amelia were born healthy at 34w3d.
Oh my what a sucky experience. That's terrible.
Did they give a percentage of the discordance? My identicals were measuring about 1 lb and 1.6 lbs at 24 weeks. I was admitted to the hospital right after the appointment because of the cord flow in the small one. They were being watched for TTTS since 22 weeks though. The discordance just got larger and larger and was near 30% when they born. Sorry I don't have a super reassuring story but in the end they came out healthy despite being extremely premature. The positives in your situation are good dopplers and fluid levels plus you are at viability which is awesome. Hopefully they all continue growing well and you can get much further along. It sounds like your MFM has a good monitoring plan in place. Lots of luck - I know it's really really hard not to worry.

So was it a radiologist or u/s tech that did your u/s? I would definitely complain! I'm surprised your MFM doesn't scan you. Mine always had his u/s tech come in first and then he would come in and look too. I think this differs in different regions of the country. Sorry she sucked so bad!
I can't remember our weights around then. My girls are not identical but one did have cord flow issues and she was a lb smaller than her sister at birth. They kept a very close eye on her during my pregnancy. It sounds like you are doing a good job of growing those babies so keep it up!
What the eff is right! That is so beyond unprofessional and just plain rude....I would have been so mad (and anxious!) if that happened to me!
I can't remember what my IDs were at 25 weeks but at 27 wks they were 2 lb 8 oz and 2 lb.....18% apart....and they measured 17% apart today. Ditto Rinascita: they watch for growth discordance as an indicator of TTTS, but any difference below 20% is OK. Fluid and doppler levels are other data points that they monitor.
It sounds like your LOs are doing great! Hang in there.....hopefully you won't have the same u/s tech next time!!
This was the actual radiologist- the tech had already scanned me and left me half naked and slimy on the table waiting for the doc for 35 mins. I'm with a big MFM practice at a big hospital in Boston, so they have a whole separate high-risk u/s department that does the scans. The MFM practice is full of awesome nurses and docs, and up until now the u/s people have been good too. But this was seriously ridiculous.

My fraternal twins had a 21% size discordance around 25 weeks and my MFM said he wanted to monitor this and to come back in 3 instead of 4 weeks. When I went back last week the size discordance increased to 25%, which is the cutoff for when they begin to increase monitoring of the situation at my MFM office. Now I have to go for weekly biophysical profiles to make sure that both babies are doing well in my womb. So far they have passed both BPPs and I will be going back for another growth scan next week. It is a little scary, but at least I am being monitored closely.
It sucks that you had such a bad experience with that tech - I would be seriously pissed in that situation. Hopefully they will keep a close eye on the situation and all will be well!
