Talk to me about table/finger foods...

We are starting to give Hayley the foods we eat - but I feel like she doesnt eat enough for a full meal. I'll give her some frozen veggies that she can pick up and eat. And I've just given her pasta for the first time tonight - she liked it but she didn't eat much - like everything else.

Should I be feeding her with a spoon/fork? I've been letting her feed herself normally - am I doing it wrong? Or do I just give her the finger foods and let her experiment, and give her some sort of puree as her "meal"?

Re: Talk to me about table/finger foods...

  • We put food on L's tray, but offer her bites from our plate or pick up pieces from her tray for her if she isn't eating enough. I don't think there's a right or wrong way, though. If she doesn't eat a lot at dinner, she has more milk. If she eats a lot, she drinks less milk. I figure it evens out.

  • I give him food on his tray and feed him stuff too. For instance tonight Ian went to his daddy's and he had dinner there...I fixed his food before I left so his daddy would know what to do. He had steak and gravy, butter beans, and mashed potatoes. He ate the steak and beans on his own, while his daddy fed him the mashed potatoes.

Another meal, the other day, was breakfast. I gave him scrambled eggs on his tray to feed himself, and fed him fruit pure from a spoon.

So, I'd offer food that she can feed herself, and feed purees or something else; if she doesn't eat enough feeding herself.

  • We also do some finger food, some spoon food.  Often it's purees, but it could also be part of our food just cut up or mashed up (like spaghetti, or mashed potatoes).  But we really follow her lead on this.  She gets frustrated with finger food because she can't get enough into her, so we spoon feed her at the same.  I think you can do whichever way your child seems to prefer.  Most kids will eat if they are hungry, or at least they will let you know.  So if they aren't getting enough food at meal time, I'm sure we'll hear about it!

  • I give both each day.
For breakfast and dinner I give him puree mixed with oatmeal.
Then snacks through out the day or finger.foods as sides with meals.
Such as eggs, puffs, graham crackers, melts, little bits and pieces off my plate depending on whether or not its reasonable...
I think you're doing it just fine. Don't compare too much to what other kids are doing your kid will do most of the leading and let you know what hes ready for and what he wants.
Mine doesn't usually eat large amounts of the finger foods either. I was surprised when he ate most of the half of graham cracker I gave him this morning!

  • We did both in the beginning. Now we do mostly table/finger food. I do still occasionally spoon feed him yogurt, apple sauce, mashed potatoes, etc. He's pretty good at eating everything in sight now Big Smile
