Intro

Hi Ladies!

After 2+ years and a lot of IF treatments we are happy to announce that through our first IVF (yes I know we are extremely lucky #1 worked!) we are expecting twins! DH and I are beyond thrilled and were secretly hoping for twins when we put back two embryos.

We had our first u/s at 6w and they were measuring a day ahead. We saw flickers of their heartbeats for both but they weren't measured yet. Hoping for that when we go back next week.

Just wanted to introduce myself and also ask a quick question. I have heard of vanishing twin and read up about it online, but I was wondering if there is a time frame (i.e. after so many weeks) that you know for sure you are going to deliver two babies. I know anything can happen at any time I was just wondering what the success rates were, etc. Especially if you already had hb's.

TIA! Can't wait to get to know everyone!

Re: Intro

  • Congratulations and welcome!!  You never know for sure that you're going to deliver 2 babies, but my OB said the chances are very good after about 12 weeks.  I've also heard that once you see 2 heartbeats you have a much better chance of keeping both.

  • Congrats and welcome! I am happy to see you here.  The thought of a vanishing twin never crossed my mind, but I think if it were to happen it would happen by 8 weeks.  Hoping you have 2 sticky babes in there!

  • Congratulations and welcome! I would think that the chances of m/c with a twin would be the same as with a singleton. After you see a HB the chances go down, and once you hit 12 weeks the chances go down even more.

  • Congrats! My OB told me that once you reach 12 weeks, the risk of vanishing twin is pretty much gone, although anything can still happen. I was a nervous wreck until 24 weeks as my boss lost a twin at 15 weeks and the other at 20. But I was also told once you hear heartbeats it goes down a lot!

  • Congrats!
I was a nervous wreck about VT. Every week that I had an u/s relieved me for a few days, then I was back to being nervous until the next one. At week 9 I started to feel a little better. Week 10 was better, but then I didn't have an u/s until week 12. I think I held my breath the entire time. At the NT scan (12 weeks) they were hiccuping and dancing on the screen, and I think that finally put my fears to rest. Knowing that they were actually developing on track, not just bigger blobs, helped a lot. I feel pretty confidant now that the VT window is behind me, although I know there are no guarantees. Now I'm really trying to focus on the positive and take it day by day and week by week. Good luck!
