First Night Home From the Hospital--Need Your Opinion

Hi- I'm pregnant with Baby #2 due late December.  My daughter will be 23 mos, when the new baby arrives and I've had a couple of friends recommend that perhaps my daughter stay with my parents the night that we come home with the new baby, so we can get settled in.  She will be staying at my parent's home, when I'm in the hospital- she loves spending time with them.  What are your thoughts or should we all stay at our house the first night as a family of four?  I guess it also depends on what time we get discharged from the hospital.  I didn't get discharged with my daughter until 8pm in the evening...thanks!

Re: First Night Home From the Hospital--Need Your Opinion

  • I've always been discharged in the morning but if I was getting out of the hospital at 8pm (my kids bed time) I would probably leave them wherever they were for the night.  DH has also always gone home at night to be with the kids (my mother lives local and we have a nanny for childcare) so we did our best to keep the kids schedule as "normal" as possible, but if your DD will already be at your parents then it's your call if you want to leave her there one more night, or pick her up on the way home.  GL and congrats!

  • I had my daughter come to the hospital to meet her sister when we were discharged.  Then we all went home as a family of 4.  I wanted to make sure she didn't feel replaced so I kept things as normal as possible.

I would request early discharge so you can get home to your family.

  • My plan at this point is to have my son stay with Grandma and Grandpa while I'm in the hospital, and then go over there for a night or 2 when we get out of the hospital so he has time to get used to the baby in neutral territory, and have all of us go back home together once he's somewhat used to her being here.
  • I had my DS1 already at home waiting for us with my mom. I felt it would be better for him to bring a new baby to him, rather than have him come home and theres this strange baby in his space.

  • I think that's a very personal decision. For me, Im a SAHM and I missed my kids terribly while I was in the hospital. Couldn't wait to get home to them. I had a lot of family around so that they could play with DD and then both DDs to keep them occupied while we tended to baby the first few days.

  • My time in the hospital with DD was the first time I had ever spent a night away from DS... I was so eager to get back home to see him, I didn't really care about anything else! It was midday when he was in daycare, so we were lucky to have a few hours to settle in before he was coming home... But even if he had already been home, I would have gone straight to see him.

Me too. But then again, I would also say to play it by ear. I got home from the hospital with DD2 in the middle of the afternoon. My mom went to pick up DD1 from daycare, and then she left, so it was the 4 of us that first night.
