Question about bedsharing

Hey ladies!  I've been lurking a lot on this board even since before I got pg.

I would love to bedshare, but I don't feel comfortable with baby sleeping between us or just scooting the bed up to the wall and having baby sleep between me and the wall.  I worry about baby falling in between the bed and wall.

I'm thinking about getting a bed rail.  Does anyone use one or have a rec?

I'm also totally open to suggestions/books/resources since I'm (obviously) very new at this :)

Re: Question about bedsharing

  • I have thought about buying a bed rail but haven't felt the need to yet. DS is not yet crawling and he sleeps really close to me and we either sleep in a Queen or King sized bed (without DH) so there is plenty of room. I've heard of moms putting a pillow towards the edge of the bed or a pool noodle under the sheet to help keep a baby from rolling,

Oh, that sounds like a good idea!  Cheaper, too!

We have our mattress on the floor so LO can crawl on and off the bed, and when he was younger, if he rolled off, he wouldn't get hurt. He never was a roller, though, and he stayed right beside me when we slept. The only time he has ever fallen off the bed was when he was just learning to crawl and hadn't quite mastered the "one leg off, slide down backwards" thing yet.

I do miss my bed frame, so I think we'll be getting a bed rail soon. I LOVE the idea of a pool noodle under the sheets, but a pillow would not have worked for us. That would take up too much space (our bed is a queen), and I'm afraid it could pose a hazard to LO when he/she is brand new.

  • I'm replying via phone so I hope this makes sense...
I mostly just lurk but I wanted to say we used a bed rail for a little while until our son was about 4 months old. He started rolling a lot and just hogged the whole bed so we finally just got a regular crib and slid it against the wall with one side off. We then slid our bed up against the side and have a makeshift cosleeper. He still sleeps right next to me but we have a lot more room in our queen bed!

  • We have a bedrail. A safety 1st one.

We got it second hand online. It was in brand new condition.

It was really good until LO started to pull up. Then I got paranoid about her flipping over the top of the rail, if she woke before I did. Now I sleep in a bed in her room with her next to the wall. I feel comfortable that there is no gap and zero chance of her falling down.

I'm glad we have the rail though because it meant I could relax about her wriggling off the bed when she was little, and we have it for when she's ready for a real bed of her own.

  • Hi ya
I have my baby boy between me and the wall but have a foam wedge guard thing under the sheet against the wall so he can't get a leg caught in any little gap. We have a king size bed and i am in the middle of my boy and hubby. Other good thing about the foam wedge is it is light and portable so you can take it away with you if nec. I bought 2 after seeing it recommended on some cosleeping sight i came across. I think I paid about 15 on Amazon. My baby boy is 14mth now and we have used it for about 5 mths now :
  • Thanks for all the great suggestions!

Is pushing the crib right up to the bed w/o one side what you ladies refer to as "sidecar"ing?

  • I've never had to worry about DD rolling off the bed or anything like that. She sleeps so soundly flat on her back or cuddled into my arm that her wriggling off hasn't been a worry so far. It is amazing how strong mummy instict is, even when we are sleeping. But every baby is different and you have to do what you are comfortable with.
