Air travel-carseat?

How in the world do you lug a convertible carseat around an airport?  We will be traveling with our 2yo and 4 mo and it seems like we have enough crap as it is, so how do you manage a car seat as well?

Re: Air travel-carseat?

  • They make backpacks for such occasions.  We have always checked ours (it's free), but we still put it in the bag.

  • They also have travel carts, that we will use when we fly next.

We use this and it's a life saver!  Yes, you will look like you're walking around with a cello on your back, but it's really fairly comfortable and not heavy that way.  Other things we've done is when DS was in an infant seat, we put his seat in the snap n go, stuffed luggage in the bottom compartment, and gate-checked both at the gate.  For convertible seats, we've gotten luggage straps and attached it caboose-style to our rolling carry-ons.  I think if you're trying to get 2 kids through the airport, you and DH should each wear a car seat- or wear one and put infant's in stroller.  I also recommend an Ergo or other carrier for carrying infant through the airport.

I know a lot of people recommend checking them, but here are the reasons I don't: they can get very banged up/dirty/wet (if they're dropped hard enough, it affects their safety), you literally can't leave the airport without your car seats, and checked luggage notoriously goes missing- especially during busy travel times like Thanksgiving.  As much of a PITA as it is to lug them around the airport, it's going to be a lot worse if you lose it or it's unusable when you get it back.

No they aren't required to sit in their carseat.  Another option is the cares harness.  I personally wouldn't fly without the carseat because I know that my son behaves in his carseat and putting a carseat under the plane is never a safe option because you never know how it's going to be handled.

  • any child over 2 has to be buckled in for takeoff and landing and when the seatbelt light is on

they don't have to be in a carseat but they DO have to be buckled in

I have a CARES harness, cause we do really long flights and it's better for us to have more seat space, carseat takes up too much room

I personally wouldn't check a carseat unless it was a spare I wans't using every day at home, I'd gate check maybe, but not at checkin as they do really beat up luggage

I also have a sit-n-stroll which is bulky but nice as you don't have to bring a stroller AND a carseat - I use it as a stroller through the airport, then for the long hauls I gate check it

  • We flew with both DDs this Aug. Between carseats, stroller, luggage, and 2 LOs it was insane. My first piece of advice is to do curbside drop-off and shell out the few bucks for one of those luggage carts. Cheaper than buying any special carrier/cart if you aren't planning a bunch of travel in the near future. We checked our infant seat with the base attached. I used my Ergo to carry DD2 through the airport. We gate checked our Chicco Liteway stroller (have traveled with this a bunch of times and always gate checked with no damage). We brought DD1s seat on the plane because I knew that she would be happiest. Lucky for us we always get to pre-board because of DD1s peanut allergy so setting up the seat is no problem.

  • We used the Brica car seat transporter when we flew a few months ago. It worked great and DD1 liked riding in her car seat through the airport.
