Did you get the flu shot?

I'm contemplating getting the flu shot! Would you reccomend getting it and are there any risks? I'm going to discuss with my dr but wanted other opinions as well!

Re: Did you get the flu shot?

  • Yes, as recommended by my OBs...and I'm required to for my job. I refused at first but was told by mulitple nurses/doctors whom I know in my personal life that they highly recommend getting it. So I did.

  • Yes, this year and when I was pregnant too. It's good to get it while you're pregnant because then the babies will have the immunity for a little while after they are born. Young infants can't get the shot for a while and it can be really bad if they get the flu.

  • Yes definitely - it's recommended for pregnant women but your doc might want to wait til after the 1st trimester.

  • Also - as many people around you as you have a say in it should get one too. Depending where you live, pertussis (whooping cough) updates are also recommended for everyone around you (people over 10-13 need the booster) to create a "wall of immunity" around you and the babies. Some docs say you should get one too but others say you should wait til the babies are born - personally I'm waiting for my booster but got my flu shot.

  • I Got it since I am having the twins during flu season.  Since I got it they are also immune to those strands as well.  Walgreens had a preservative free version and I didn't have any side effects at all.  The shot that I did react to was the whooping cough shot.

  • Same as all the other responses...

I went ahead and got it from my pharmacist (he's great!) around 20 weeks or so along.  It was late September a week or 2 after the current flu season's vaccine was released.

To be honest, I probably should've asked or at least called my doctor's office but they asked me if I had one for the 2011 - 2012 season at my first prenatal appointment and if I planned to get the 2012 - 2013 season one... I said I didn't know about this year and they just said we could discuss later when the new season's was released (I took that as an approval to get it).

  • Yep, just got it last week from CVS. Make sure the pharmacy knows you're pregnant, so they give you the preservative-free one.

  • YES! The shot (not the mist). Also, in my area Whooping Cough is much higher this year than it has been in the past so you might ask your doc about getting that one, too.

  • I am in the minority here.  I am not getting it.  The one and only time I ever got it, I never had the flu so many times in my life.  I typically don't get the flu, and I know you are more suseptible when you are pregnant, but I just know how bad that one year was for me.

  • If you got the flu the single year you had the flu vaccine, it was either complete coincidence, or you received the live mist vaccine. It is not possible to contract the flu from the inactivated injected vaccine.

It was def the vaccine and not mist. I literally had it 5 times that year. It was probably just a coincidence, but enough to make me not want the vaccine again. It just my personal opinion for myself, not anyone else because I understand the benefits of it.

  • I got mine at 28 weeks at my OBs office. They didn't really even ask if I wanted want. The nurse just walked in and said it's time for your flu shot.

I'll get my Pertussis vaccine in the hospital after I deliver.
