High-Risk Pregnancy

Incompetent Cervix

I'm 13w5d my mom had a incompetent cervix and I was born at 29 weeks and I'm now 26 healthy as a horse, my dr wants to monitor me every few weeks and check my length of my cervix via ultrasound,. Should I be worried? I had spotting at 9 and 10 weeks and my cervix was checked at 10 weeks  and was fine. I think I'm doing too much google reading

Re: Incompetent Cervix

  • My mom had my sister at term and had IC with me.  Emergent cerclage and delivered me at 30 weeks.

I had twins.  My cervix shortened to 1 cm at 23 weeks.  I did bedrest from 23 to 36 weeks.

I think your doctor is brilliant for being so proactive.

  • Did your doctor specifically say that you have IC? I haven't ever heard if it is inherited or not, I am the only woman in my family that has IC. Unless he has reason to think you are at risk, then I wouldn't overly worry right now. You are pretty early on that if you do end up with a shortening or funneling cevix, they will catch it in time.

    Good luck Smile

  • I agree that I think your doctor being proactive in watching your cervix is great. I have no idea about the genetic role in IC, but should your cervix start to shorten, and your doctor catches it (which they would with monitoring), there are things that can be done to hold baby in longer (cerclage, 17p shots, bedrest). I think it's really nice that your doctor will do the extra monitoring without you having your own past pregnancy with IC. Good luck.

  • One of my sisters lost twins to IC, I gave birth at 26w due to IC.  I have another sister who had two perfect pregnancies.  All that to say, who knows?!  Being proactive can't hurt anything!
  • Thanks guys I feel better! I'll let u know on Thursday!

  • Yay for your Dr watching you....with my first I mentioned that my sister delivered early and my OB brushed me off and said it meant nothing.  I ended up spotting a lot and at 20 weeks it was discovered I had a really short cervix.  When meeting with the high risk Dr he said that even though there are no studies showing it runs in families , he believes it does going by his 30+ yrs of work.

I wouldn't panic or anything b/c you could be perfectly fine, but I would keep getting monitored.  My issues didn't happen until 20+ weeks with my first

  • There definitely seems to be a genetic component to IC, I'm surprised a doctor would say it isn't. Way too many stories of it running in families for such a rare thing. I think it's great your doctor is being so proactive too. You are certainly at some risk for IC, and regular monitoring will help watch for it. Best case, you'll just get a bunch of extra ultrasounds! Worst case, at least you'll catch it early if something does happen, which many women don't in a first pregnancy for someone with IC.

  • Great for your doctor. My mom had 3 devastating IC after having me. I just had one last year and pregnant now. My doc is gonna do preventative cerclage and said that when my sister gets older and starts having kids she needs to be monitored closely. Bc she'll be high risk for. The beginning even though my OB agrees there's no definitive genetic link with IC's. I wish I was high risk from the beginning like my sister will be.
  • Glad to hear your doctor is being so proactive! My mom had IC. Her first pregnancy ended in a second trimester loss (21weeks in 1982), and went on to have 5 successful term pregnancies with the help of a preventative cerclage. Hers was determined to have been caused by an exposure to the drug DES while in utero ~1960. My first pregnancy, I specifically asked my OB about a genetic link, and he assured me there was no evidence of a genetic issue. Regardless, I lost my mucous plug at 19 weeks, was 2-3cm dilated, with membranes bulging. An emergency cerclage was attempted, but didn't succeed-my water broke during the procedure. I ended up delivering our daughter stillborn at 20w. This pregnancy, I had a preventative cerclage placed at 13 weeks, and will be 36 weeks tomorrow. (I have also been taking preventative procardia, and p17 shots). I am definitely pushing for my sisters to get monitoring whenever they get pregnant!
