How do you roast a chicken?

I mean what do you put on it? Is there a way I could make it have some decent flavor with minimal touching of the raw chicken? Can't I just cut up some lemons and stick them right on top? Would that make a lemon chicken?

Is it better to put tinfoil on top of it while it's cooking so it doesn't dry out?

Wth. I really don't want to mess with this chicken. Ugh. I'm like having an anxiety attack just thinking about having to touch a raw chicken.

Any information you have on roasting a chicken would be greatly appreciated.

I might have roasted a chicken before, but it's also likely that I've just seen them roasted on TV a few times.

Thanks!

    I love you.

I've never thought about putting on gloves to touch a chicken.  Do you think it'd be appropriate to stuff it full of lemons? Or would that be weird?

  • Mmm...I'm not sure that you'd want to stuff it full of lemons, per se. This recipe looks really good, and has plenty of lemons!

That one does look good! And seems like few ingredients which is always a plus! I wonder if it would really eff it up if I skipped the wine?

I usually do too, but I wanted to make a chicken for Thanksgiving. It just seemed way less threatening than a turkey, you know?

My experience with chicken, is generally the boneless/skinless breasts that I just pour some oregano/basil on and throw in the oven. Very little "hands on"

I don't think so, but you do want moisture--I'd use chicken broth instead.

I've  never cooked a turkey before but this year I am and I plan to make a butterflied turkey.  Google it!  It reduces the cooking time a whole bunch.. the only down side is you have to give the turkey a bit of an autospy.. get big sharp kitchen scissors and cut along the sides of its spinal cord to remove the back bone, and then lay it flat to cook

That sounds like it would be good, but I could never get that intimate with a bird. Good luck! I'm sure it'll turn out great.

Something about the texture of raw poultry just drives me nuts for some reason!!

  • I do mine in the crockpot. Two lemons, cut into chunks, a bunch of peeled garlic cloves, smashed, and paprika and salt. Toss it all it (make the paprika look pretty on the skin) and cook on low all day. Take the inside of the crock pot out and stick in the oven for a few minutes under the broiler for crispy skin. Its seriously the most flavorful, moist chicken in the world. I have to make it this week now, thanks ;)

  • I guess you don't want to come over and help me stuff my chicken today. I'm making beer can chicken. I rub spices all over it and inside, then I stuff a beer can up its ass.

I would stuff it full of lemons. When I roast a whole chicken, I usually stuff it full of onions and apples.

  • You can also just buy a turkey breast.  Still turkey, but much more approachable.

  • I have to say, although most of these ladies blow my skills away with their WFD posts, I actually find cooking a turkey/chicken to be one of the easier meals to make. You can make it as simple as rubbing with a little salt and pepper or as complex as Chef Google recommends.

I do a very similar version of this except I place the chicken on a couple of rolled up tin foil balls in the crock pot. This prevents the chicken from sitting in it's own grease all day and the skin comes out crispy.

To OP...I second the gloves. I almost always wear them when I work with anything raw since it kind of grosses me out too.
