My doctors office called and I am extremely anemic (there words)... They said I need to get iron supplements and they might make me constipated. Well I am already trying to ward off constipation with hemorrhoids. So now I also have to get stool softer ,and metamucil. Oh the joys of pregnancy! Anyone have tips, going through something similar or am I the only lucky winner?
Re: Anyone else anemic? TMI?
I haven't got my test results back but I am expecting to be told I'm anemic again. I was told I was "slightly anemic" with DS and had to take an iron pill everyday after 28 weeks. It wasn't really that bad and I didn't have a problem with constipation but poo was black and a little hard at times.
I talked to my MW about it this time and she said there's a liquid version of iron supplement called Flondex and you can only get it at like a whole foods or vitamin store. She said it does NOT cause constipation and people who take it have said they feel more energetic. I will probably try it once I find out the inevitable soon.
When I first got the news I was anemic the first time, I was totally annoyed and surprised. But then I got the iron pills and it says right on the bottle that the most common people to have low iron are women of child-bearing age. We're normal, no worries.
i was on my last pregnancy and i had to take extra iron supplements.. and like you i was on stool softeners.. it sucks taking all the extra meds but if its for baby and your best interest.. i just sucked it up and had to take 4 extra pills of iron for about 10 weeks straight
... but i knew i was doing it for my LO.. so it didnt matter i DID IT! and thank god this time around i havent needed them yet ... so i hooope i stay away from them
Good Luck momma hang in there
Thankfully I am not anemic with pregnancy, but have suffered from anemia in the past. Slow-release iron pills are much better than the normal ones, but make sure you take your iron with food (otherwise the pills hurt my stomach). I also found it helped to add iron-rich foods to my diet.
The best thing for regularity for me has actually been flax. I put 2 T. of ground flax seed in my morning smoothie and everything runs much smoother (pun intended). Good luck! I was on a high dose of iron for 3 years... it's not that bad if you eat things to help with the side effects of the pills.
I have to take 4 iron pills a day on top of my prenatal vitamin.
Drink lots of water, eat lots of fiber, take your stool softener religiously.
It'll still be a PITA (LOL), but it'll be a little more survivable
I have been anemic since early on in my pregnancy. Make sure to take your iron with food. I have also been taking stool softeners daily (the pharmacist said it is best to take them at night before bed) and I haven't had any problems with constipation.... I better go knock on some wood! I hope that you start feeling better! It took me a few weeks to actually start feeling better and not dizzy and light headed all the time.
