Babies: 9 - 12 Months

when babies truly sleep trough the night?

my LO keeps waking up every once in a while, so I'm wondering if there is finally an age when babies truly sleep trough the night without waken up every once in a while but more rarely they wake up?

  • I think it's anywhere from a few months old up until three years old! It varies so much.

My son still wakes about twice a night.

  • You're going to get a wide variety of answers on this. There isn't a magical age. My DD STTN at 3-4m, my DS was at 6m. There are some preschoolers out there that are up in the night. It's just different for every kid.

  • Depends what you mean. Most kids go through sleep cycles where they briefly wake through the night. the difference is if they need you or not. I have slept in a room a few times in the last 2 months with my now 10 month old. She wakes occasionally, babbles or cries out, or just shifts around. But she hasn't "needed" anything since around 4 months old so when she is in her own room, I don't hear her. I don't use a monitor anymore at night since her room is close by.

My 4 year old wakes occasionally. Sometimes comes in to tell me she needs something, then goes back to bed.

  • I'm 30 and still wake up occasionally. Every baby is different.

    Stick out tongue  Very true.

DD, 6 weeks straight through the night and will occasionally wake with a nightmare or need me for something.

DS, at 11 months got to the point where I HAD to let him cry it out. I think I was getting to the point where I was starting to lose it from him being up so often. Needed to learn to self sooth because he wouldn't go back to sleep without nursing.

    All babies are different.

  • I agree with all the pp's that every child's sleep patterns are different. It's normal for them to wake up during the night, especially for their first year .I too wake up throughout the night. Sometimes I'm even thirsty and I get myself some water because I can. Sometimes I read these posts about ignoring the baby and letting them CIO during the night and it makes me cringe. What if they are really wet, thirsty or a little hungry and they are trying to tell someone and they get ignored? I have sound sleepers and lighter sleepers, it's just how they are:)

Yeah I know what you mean, we try the CIO method advised by our Pediatrician and it was terrible, it make me feel like a bad momma, so I have to look for other resources in different books and start picking up different pieces from different methods that I see was working and finally I could train her to sleep without letting her cry unnecessarily or stopping to attend her needs.

I see a lot of your babies where sleeping at an early age, mine took longer (finally at 9 months after 3 months of sleep training) to reach that STTN stage but now she is waking up again more frequent and I'm afraid to return back to the old days with barely sleeping periods. So I wanted to know if eventually is an age when they stop needing your assistance at night, but I have an idea now!

  • Unfortunately the only answer is "when they're ready to". We did CIO around 8 months and they were just up once a night to eat after that. At their 9 month appointment the doctor said to try to break that habit and as of last weekend DD1 STTN and DD2 wakes up once or twice and we have to put her pacifier in. I can't wait for the day when I can actually STTN but who knows when that will happen. However once or twice a night for a minute to pop in a pacifier is much, much better then where we were a couple of months ago.

I say, trust your gut. That is my issue with sleep training, for US it feels wrong. Plain and simple.

If I had done it, sure, my son may STTN now, but I keep hearing that babies need to often be "retrained" due to teething, or other disruptions like growth spurt, learning a new skill, travel. It's not for us.

If it feels right to sleep train again, do it. I personally have never asked my pedi for advice (nor has he ever asked how my son sleeps) and I think you just know as a Mom what feels right for your particular child.

  • I agree with others... We all wake up at night or toss and turn at some point. Depending what sleep cycle we are in. With my daughter we did a version of CIO from Ferber but we completely modified it. I never had my daughter cry/fuss more than 5 mins w out me checking on her or re assuring her. I started around 5 months, before that she would wake up twice a night from 7am-6am. I dropped 1 feeding, then the 2nd one. By 6 months she slept straight through but I wake up when I hear her tossing around. But all babies are so different!
