Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Baby Signing Time - help

I'm interested in teaching my baby sign language. She's just about 4 months old. Does anyone know anything about this? When should I start? How should I go about it?

I heard of a cute DVD series called Baby Signing Time, but they are so expensive. Any reviews on this series and anyone willing to sell their copy?

Re: Baby Signing Time - help

  • Are the DVDs meant for you to watch and then teach your child or for your child to watch?!?

I'm thinking about watching a few youtube clips of certain words and then teaching her a few main ones (eat, milk, book, maybe dirty diaper, more, full, water) come to mind.  I don't want a DVD that is designed for her to watch.

ETA:  If that is what you want, the babysteals archive has it.  I question the educational value of getting babies to watch tv... I think learning it yourself and then teaching her would be better... but that's just my opinion...

  • You can start signing with baby anytime, really. Obviously it'll take a LOT of repetition for baby to catch on. I usually start around 6 months with 'milk' and 'more'. The signs are quite simple to learn and there are lots of great resources (books and DVDs) through libraries, so try that before spending much money on it.

Essentially you just use the sign often with the word or action. So if LO is starting solids, you can present them with some food, sign 'food', say the word food, and sometimes help them also make the sign. If they want more food, sign 'more', say more etc. If you really want LO to pick it up, then consistency is key, so be sure DH and any other care giver knows the signs too.

it's really easy and even just a few simple signs can ease the early communication between you and LO.

  • We are teaching my daughter ASL - and for now she just watches.  I learned alot from watching the videos myself.  You can check them out from your library.  We have started with 5 words, and will add later.  It takes 2-3 months before they will be able to sign back.  But they will understand before that....

  • The Baby Signing Time videos are wonderful!  My son now 3 yr old began learning signs around 8 months (maybe slightly earlier). It was great thing to have him watch while I got dinner ready or ready to go to work in the morning.  The videos show clips of other children doing the signs and he loved to look at the kids, as well as the songs.

  • Parenting.com recently sent out an article about this.  They say around 4-5 months, baby will begin to understand what you're doing when you sign to them, but it'll be around 7-9 months when they have the dexterity to sign back to you.  The article also had pictures of a few common signs.  Say the word and use the sign repeatedly throughout the day, and they'll catch on and sign back when able.
  • I love the BST videos, they actaully use ASL unlike other dvd series.  I took two courses, and have taught others.  The best time to start is at 3 months.  Don't expect to see any results right away.  Choose 3 signs and use them exculsively until your baby signs one back to you, then add in one or two signs at a time.  Start with objects and not concepts because concepts are harder for them to figure out. (It's much easier for them to figure out the "milk" sign than the "all done" sign.)  We started with "milk", "socks" and "book", which are signs that we have opportunities to use mulitple times a day (she kicks her socks off constantly so we always sign when we put them back on). Do the sign and repeat 2-3 times the word loudly and clearly.  I also sign "milk" while she's BFing saying things like "are you drinking your milk", or "is that good milk?"  At almost 5 months she reacts now everytime we sign "milk" by squeeling to eat and even thrust her hand out.  good luck!

  • Baby Signs has great DVDs. They are my favorite because there are actually babies signing on the movies. You can get the complete DVD series for 40% off - they are less than $10/DVD - using promo code DVD40 and this link https://www.pjtra.com/t/R0BKSURLRUBLRkxFSUBFQ0hGSw

We have been signing with my daughter since the beginning and she started signing around 8 months. She is now 10 months and signs more, all-done, potty, nurse, and understands even more. We do the  Sign, Say & Play classes with our mommy group.

If you are concerned about TV/Movie viewing read this article: https://babysignsinc.blogspot.com/2011/10/lots-to-cheer-about-in-latest-aap.html
