GTT Is It True!?!?

I have my test next Wednesday.  I was told by a few of my pregnant friends to cut down on the sugar the week before and it should help. I have only gained 15 punds and for the most part have not had a huge sugar craving.  Not to mention I have not really changed my diet much since getting pregnant.  Any advice?!?!

Re: GTT Is It True!?!?

  • I'm not much help but I also have gained only about 20 pounds so far.  I have my GTT in the morning and the only thing my OB advised me was to fast after midnight tonight and to bring something to eat for after the test.  I also havent changed my diet either so I am hoping all goes well with the GTT tomorrow.

  • I had mine last week.  I am supposed to cut out all sugar and processed carbs per my MW's diet, but have been *terrible* the last few weeks.  I was not told to fast before the test, so ate scrambled eggs + toast and a cup of coffee (with sugar and milk).  I passed - apparently my numbers were super low. Unfortunately, I think this is just one of those things... if you are going to get it, you are going to get it.  :(
  • I have my test tomorrow and my doctor said that fasting or cutting out all sugar before the test can actually cause a false positve result and advised me to eat as normal (pehaps don't eat syrup covered pancakes for breakfast right beforehand).

  • I don't know, but I have heard there is a very high "false positive" rate for the 1 hour test.  I just took mine today and I failed....now I have to take the 3 hour.  I hope what they say about false positives is true because I really don't want to have to worry about having GD.  I have a degree in Nutrition, so I know how to eat and I do eat very healthy.  I eat a LOT of protein, and always have...hardly any sweets....so even with an almost picture perfect diet, a weight gain of 20lbs (I have gone from 115 to 135, and I'm 5'6", so not even close to being overweight) I still failed the 1 hour test.  My only "risk factor" is my age.....so honestly I can't help answer your question as to why some women who eat well and are of a desirable weight fail, while others who drink soda all day and are 30lbs overweight pass, except for what DC said:  If you're gonna get it, you're gonna get it and there's nothing you can do!!!!  :-(  :-(

  • Why would you want to try to skew your GTT results?

This. It's one of those things that you either have or you don't. I didn't change my diet at all. In fact, I ate cookie dough the night before my test.  Just do everything you normally do.

You can't "make" yourself diabetic, KWIM?  GD is not the result of eating too much sugar.  With that said, what you eat in the 12-18 hours immediately prior to the test *could* affect your results, but I don't know that cutting down on sugar for a week will make a difference (I'm no doctor, though.  I could be totally off base).

Agree... My thoughts is that they test how your body breaks down and processes sugar. This can change when you are pregnant (ie GD)... Not a Doc, but I dont think cutting out sugars, etc prior to the GTT will make a huge difference. Your body is your body!

I had my test yesterday - the orange drink almost made me puke and made me dizzy... GROSE

My numbers were pretty low too, 68 at the 1 hour mark. I ate normally the night before and had breakfast about 4 hours before the test.
