OB or Midwife (Poll)

We did IVF and transferred 2.  My first beta came back high (489 at 9dp5dt, 14dpo).  My nurse said there is a good possibility of twins.  We will confirm how many I am pregnant with at the end of November.  I have always wanted a natural birth with a midwife.  I'm thinking that might not happen if its twins.  I want the best for our baby/babies so I am willing to do whatever it take to have healthy pregnancy.

My ideal birth would be with a midwife and being monitored by a MFM (the 2 providers working together) if it is twins.

Did anyone have a twin birth with a midwife?

Thank you (and please no flames)

  • At my office we have both an OB and a MW. I see the OB for all visits but I expect both of them to attend the birth.

  • in the province of Ontario (where I live) midwives are not licensed to deliver high risk. Twins is not a simply as an extra baby to monitor. There are so many things that can go wrong...you really want a top of their game pro looking after you!

I had a planned section with my twins.  After all the research I had done as well as an appointment with the chief of ob in my hospital we determined that was the safest way to deliver my babies.

Good luck...hope you have a healthy pregnancy.

  • I really wanted a midwife as well. I had one with my DD #2 and loved the experience I had. However she was uncomfortable with dealing with twins mostly because I was already considered high risk because of my c-section with DD #1. There ARE some midwifes that are open to it depending on the type of twins and other risk factors.

  • My Ob group has Ob's & cnm's. I love my Ob & stuck with her. The CNM could have delivered baby A , but the doc has to be present for a twin birth & I think has to deliver baby B in Ohio.

  • I saw my midwife for the first 20 weeks and then transferred to a high risk OB. I wish I would have continued care with my midwife though.

  • I saw an OB and MFM.  I would have gone straight MFM but they don't deliver in my area, only consultation.  I love CNMs for low risk pregnancies and deliveries, but I don't think I would feel comfortable with one in a high risk situation (I consider any type of twins high risk, but there are some who don't).  I am friends with someone who delivered her twins naturally in a birthing center with midwifes so it is possible.  It would not be worth the risk to me, but to each her own.
  • I replied other.

I only saw a high risk ob (MFM).

  • I originally saw a midwife before we knew it was twins. Once we found out, they no longer could see me because they don't do high risk pregnancies.

I went to an OB and perinatologist (MFM)

  • I went into pregnancy wanting as low-intervention a birth as possible and was definitely considering using a MW but when I found out I was having twins and did some research, I settled on wanting an OB who was supportive of a twin birth with no unnecessary interventions. Fortunately I found one; he was great and I had a wonderful experience with my hospital birth with my OB. Personally I would not be comfortable seeing a MW for a twin pregnancy.

  • I used to see an OB for my annual GYN visits but once I got pregnant they started talking about scheduling my C-section between 37 - 38 weeks... and it just seemed overwhelming and NOTHING like I had wanted or envisioned for my family and birthing experience.  My OB and nurses just seemed so opposed to having anything natural as a part of my experience.

I found a wonderful Midwifery Practice that has delivered countless multiples and is partnered with the top doctor in my city, which is a MFM.  My MFM is wonderful and told me that Baby A will dictate my delivery but as long as he is not breech (foot-first) but frank breech is fine, he'll let me attempt a vaginal delivery.  I am allowed to labor any way I want - walking the halls, in the shower, birthing stool, ball, etc. and I don't have to labor and/or deliver in the OR.  My MFM has assured me that we'll have plenty of time to get the babies out via a 'family centered surgical birth' (i.e., my hands won't be tied down, I get to pick the drape level or to have one at all, and the babies will be delivered to my chest unless medically necesary to be handed off to a Neonatologist) if an emergency arises but he will just 'hover' in the background and let the midwives do their thing at the hospital.

Only things I'm not allowed to do is attempt a vaginal delivery if Baby A is breech (foot first) or labor/deliver in the birthing tub... I really wanted to labor in the water but my midwife told me the shower will be *almost* as good and a definite option if I want to use it.

  • I had a natural birth with an OB with my twins. I personally wouldn't have wanted a midwife, but that's just me. My OB gave me the side-eye a little over the fact that I refused the epidural and didn't want Pitocin with my induction, but both of my babies were head down and my labor kicked into high gear right after my water was broken with no help from Pit, so it all worked out just fine.  I was lucky, though.  I know things could've gone much differently if my babies hadn't been so cooperative.  Hope you have a H&H 9 months!

  • I was with an OB up until 12w. I was then with the Perinatologist (MFM physician) only, and she is the one who will likely deliver me. I have a midwife on my team who intends to be there during my delivery if she can for the sake of advocating and keeping me comfortable - but the Peri is the primary for all of my appointments.

  • Other - Saw both a MFM and OB, both were part of the same high risk office. MFM was the ultimate decision maker but I had most of my visits with my OB and scheduled my c/s with him. I just felt a lot more comfortable with him.
