new to the board/ how early did you find out??

Hi, I am Dawn. I have a 7 year old Easton and I am due June 28th (man that's a long time off haha)  here is a little background on my pregnancy. It is nice to meet you all

I have a history of fibroids so I had a very early ultrasound to check their sizes and locations out. My ultrasound was at about 5 weeks or so. I got called into the office for the results ( I thought for sure something with the fibroids had made this a non viable pregnancy when they made me come in) and was told there was two gestational sacs but they only saw a yolk sac in one. My doctor said at the time that there was a 50% chance that the pregnancy would continue as twins and ordered another ultrasound. In a week and a half I went back (longest week and a half ever mind you) and the tech got one very clear heartbeat and definitely saw another bean in the other sac. The bean seemed smaller and tucked in a corner. As we know the tech couldn't say much so I went home and waited to get the results the next day.

When I called he said he heartbeat of one was 146 and the second was 138 He said both seemed to be progressing well and eventually said the percentage of it continuing as twins was now 90% I have been extremely sick, started anti nausea meds this week but they haven't done much. I am just chalking it up as a sign that both babies are still in there and doing well. I am now about 7.5 weeks only and my doctor isn't having me come back in for a regular appointment until the week after Thanksgiving and will schedule the next ultrasound for my 11-12th week. Should I take that as a good sign that he doesn't want to re check earlier? I am just so nervous every second about all that could happen and I start googling vanishing twin syndrome and all these other things I know I shouldn't. Not a waking second goes by that I am not wondering if they are still both there and if they are still growing. I try to calm myself that if there is no bleeding or cramping everything is ok but I know I might not actually have any of those signs.

Has anyone had experience with finding this out so early that can share their story??

Thanks,
Dawn

  • I found out I was having twins at my 9 week ultrasound.  We had 2 great heartbeats but I am still super worried about them.  My doctor said things look really good since there were 2 nice heartbeats.  I go back on 11/29 for my 12 week ultrasound.  Try not to stress. I am trying to be very positive and think only good thoughts.

  • I found out at 7 weeks due to being high risk.  I also thought I was further along like I was with DD.  I found out I was pregnant with her at 15 weeks.  Behold it wasn't that I was further it was that there were two!

  • I found out it was twins at our 6 week u/s.   We then had another u/s at 8 weeks to be released from our RE to OB.  My OB did not do another u/s until 13 weeks at our NT scan.

As there is not much they can do in the first trimester besides monitor and watch you won't have as many u/s.   As your pregnancy progresses you should receive more u/s than other moms of singletons as they will want to monitor you a little more closely.  I was at an u/s every 4 weeks until 24 weeks and now I am at every two weeks.  I will move weekly at 30-32 weeks depending on how everything is going.

I think so far things are going along fine with what you have said.  It is completely nerve wracking waiting sometimes 4 weeks to see them again.

  • We had a dating ultrasound at 9 weeks and found ours, with two strong heart beats. Didn't go back for another ultrasound until 12 weeks, longest 3 weeks of my life!

If you saw heartbeats, your chances of them both being viable are VERY HIGH. Try not to stress, I know that's hard, but try to just put your mind on something else until you can see them again.

    Congratulations!!!!!

  • I found out at 6 weeks due to High Risk, Losses and IF meds.

    Congrats on your twins.

  • My OB does standard 8-week ultrasounds at the first pregnancy visit, so we found out then.

  • 6 weeks 2 days.

We then had follow-up U/S for the next two weeks because I was seeing an RE, then I was released to the OB.  I then had an U/S around 10w - 11w.  Because my twins share a gestatsional sac, I'm high risk and they have bee trying to determine if the have a membrane between them, so I've pretty much had an U/S every two weeks since then.

I always get nervous the day of the doctor's appt because I worry something might be wrong, but I try not to stress about it in between.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • Congrats on your twins!

I found out it was fraternal twins at 6 weeks with my IVF doc. They didn't find the identical in the sac until week 9 so then it became triplets.

I'm sure you will be like me and everyone else who has twins and wonder everyday if they're ok, healthy and growing. I'm 21 weeks now and it hasn't gotten much easier. In the beginning of my pregnancy I even looked up ultrasound schools that need their students to practice giving ultrasounds on pregnant patients but never did. I figured if something was wrong I'd rather have the doctor tell me than a student... Good luck!

  • We found out at 5wks with our RE that we had fraternal twins since we did IVF.  At that point we saw two sacks.  At 6wks we saw one hb and not the other.  RE still was cautious about declaring twins.  At 7wks we finally saw two strong hbs, but were measuring almost a week apart.  He declared twins, but said we were not out of the woods for vanishing twin, but that there was nothing we could do to prevent it.  So he really stressed that (to the extent possible) we should not stress over it since stress is not helpful.  Thankfully (she says cautiously), our two boys are still going strong and are comparable in size.  I wish you the best with your little ones, too!

  • We found out at 8.5 weeks and have been excited/worried/happy/stressed, etc. ever since.  I just ended up praying whenever I feel overwhelmed because it's the most I feel like I can do.  Plus, it makes me feel more relaxed.

By the way, last time I used homemade candied ginger to relieve nausea.  It was a real life saver.  I'm not using it now because I'm not dealing with that symptom this time. I can give you the recipe if you would like.  It's pretty simple and you can carry several pieces in a sandwich bag where ever you go.  You'll hate ginger by the end, but it clears up the nausea within moments of hitting your tongue.

  • We found out at our first ultrasound which was 6 weeks 4 days and then our RE did weekly US until we graduated at 10 weeks. My OB now does an US at every visit (right now they are about every 3 weeks) but its just a quick size and heartbeat measurement. I have my first maternal fetal medicine appointment tomorrow at 15 weeks 5 days where they will do a cervical length check and an early anatomy scan. I will have another anatomy scan at 20 weeks. So tons and tons of ultrasounds for us, but I think every doctor is different.

    Congrats on your twins :)

  • First, congrats!

I found out there were 2 at 5wks at the RE.  Then at 6wks 3days we saw two heartbeats and at 8 weeks my RE did one more u/s to release me to my OB.  The OB did one at 9wks because they waned to give me a date and check things out themselves.  I didn't have another one until 13wks.

If it wasn't for the RE's office I wouldn't have been seen until 9wks or so at the OB and then not again until 12/13wks.  I wouldn't worry.  There really isn't much they can do that early.

  • We found out at 6 weeks and have had 3 ultrasounds. So far everything has been good. Our next one is next week and I am about to go crazy waiting. Since I am 14 weeks, I hope I will be less worried about things going wrong after this next appt. Because, every day I wonder what's going on inside there. I am just trying to stay positive and not think about all the things that could go wrong. Because there is nothing I can actually do about them, so why worry?
