Toddlers: 24 Months+

PLEASE HELP!!

DD is almost 29 months. She has been potty trained for 5 months but will not for the LIFE of me poop in the toliet!! I dont know what else to do or try.

She goes in her underwear, in her pull up, anywhere but the toliet!

She knows where the poop goes because we have shown her when we go. When she poops we make her help us put her poop from her pants into the toliet. If you ask her where she is supposed to go poop she will tell you that its supposed to go in the toliet.

We have tried rewards with toys, sticker charts, m&ms.

I dont know what else to do! 5 months of pooping in her pants is taking a toll on me! Please any advice would be sooooo appreciated!

Re: PLEASE HELP!!

  • Sorry I am no help. I am just jealous. DD is 34 months and we are just now starting to have some success with potty training.

  • DD had the same issues. She was pee trained WAY before she was poop trained. We tried everything too, but what we ultimately had to do was just wait until she was ready. 29 months is way too early to be worried about it, IMO.

  • My friends DD (who is very smart) just started regularly using the potty for pooping last summer, right before she turned 4 in August.  You're probably not going to win this battle. If she doesn't want to poop in the potty, I would rather have her poop somewhere else than not poop at all and deal with that issue.  What I did with DD2 while she was still new to potty training and not thrilled with pooping on the potty, was keep her in underwear 90% of the time and then put her in a diaper when she hadn't pooped for awhile.  She was tired of this routine in under a week and started taking off the diaper to poop on the potty but for you it would at least eliminate some clean up mess.  We also did a lot of naked time.  But again, my DD was just figuring out the pt thing.  If yours knows what she's supposed to be doing, naked time might just end up with a very constipated toddler for you.  Be happy though, 29 months is still young for even being pee trained!

  • My suggestion is to get some books and videos that specifically talk about pooping.  "Where is the poop?" is a great book...  extremely kid friendly with lift flaps.  It starts with baby elephants pooping and other animals and eventually gets to a kid pooping in the potty.  I got it on Amazon.

If your DD likes Elmo, there is a youtube video called "Potty Time."  Also talks about pooping on the potty.

29 months is still young, but it's definitely possible!  Hang in there!

  • We're in the same boat.  DD has been 100% pee trained for almost 2 months, but she is terrified to poop on the toilet.  She has done it twice (once at daycare and once with my MIL).  Everything that I've read says it just takes time and to not get frustrated with them.  It is very annoying to clean it out of her undies everyday though!

  • Have you given her a brief overview of what poop is? I've heard that some kids are scared of "part of themselves" going in the toilet.

  • Here's what worked for us.  She would ask for a diaper to poop in and I was happy with this for a while (better than her going in underwear).  Then we counted down the diapers that were left in her basket and I said after that we would only wear diapers for nap/bed.  Then she still wasn't totally ready, so I put the diaper in her potty seat so she could still poop into it but it was a good transition into the potty.  After only a few times she was pooping in the little potty without the diaper and then in the big potty very soon after that.

  • I know how frustrating it can be, but be patient. It took DD almost 4 months of being pee trained before she would poop in the potty. Like PP have said 29 months is still young, it will happen. Sorry I'm no help
