Colors, shapes, and ABC's

Not sure how to exactly word what im asking...sorry

Im a stay at home mom and we are on the go all day everyday....we are forever exploring which i know is the best but im just wondering what were/are some toys that you used to spark the interest of your little ones for the above....My son refuses to sit and do a shape sorter. Other then just saying things to explain the above (yellow banana, blue circle) were there any toys that did the trick for you?

Being home makes me a little nervous that he's not all the interested in "learning" from me as opposed to preschool/daycare ...Trying to work on the alphabet, just picked up a train (which he loves) floor puzzle with ABC's so we'll see how that goes LOL

Re: Colors, shapes, and ABC's

  • I sorted our mega blocks by color a bazillion times. A lot of his learning about shapes and colors comes from books that aim to teach shapes and colors. They have terrible (no) stories- I just point to the pictures and talk about them.

I have an ABC wall above the changing table so sometimes we point to letters during diaper changes. Honestly, I think TV has taught him more about letters than I have... Super Why and the Leap Frog Scout movie. (both on netflix)

  • Pinterest is such a wealth of knowledge for this sort of thing. Lots of good ideas for crafts, games, and activities for all ages and levels of activity.

For example, one of DD's favorite activities is "fizzy colors". All you do is put a layer of baking soda in a cake pan (or other flat container). Then put vinegar in some little cups and add a few drops of food coloring to each cup to make different colors. Use medicine droppers (in my experience pharmacies will give you large ones for free if you ask) turkey basters, etc to drop some of the vinegar colors onto the baking soda. It fizzes like crazy. You can incorporate talking about the colors while having fun with the fizz. (i.e. "which color would you like to try next?"). I love this activity because the materials are cheap and nothing is toxic if the kids try a taste.

  • I have the color boxes from lakeshore and they rreally helped my son learn colors. Shapes came from puzzles.  Alphabet from puzzles, books, and we play a game with a magnetic fishing pole and magnetic letters, he loves to "fish" for them.

  • Honestly with DD1 I just pointed out colors, numbers, etc when we were out and about. Give them some books while you're in the car or even just do songs.

  • 2 of our best purchases were the bath tub letters/numbers and an ABC Thomas Book.  My son loves playing with his letters in the tub and sticking them to the wall.  We just started by telling him the letter and/or number and what color it was.  They come in all kinds of colors.  He is also a HUGE Thomas the Train fan, so we got him an ABC book about Thomas.  I swear we read that book to him several times a day and he knows about 90% of his letters.  He is getting better with colors and he isn't so good with numbers, but we are slowly working on those now.  We haven't really started shapes yet.  Don't want to overload his little brain. :)

We both work full-time and he goes to day care and it is a very pre-school-like environment...so that does help him too.

Good luck!  Remember that all LOs pick up things on their own time. :)

PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...

  • I am doing tot school based on blogs I have found on-line.  Every week is a new letter and I pick a book for each day of the work week to go with that letter.  For example this week is E week and today is Elephants so we are reading a couple of Mo Willems books, I have a few Elephant printables I found on-line, and we are playing Elefun.  Today touches on - the color grey, the letter E and counting (butterflies from the Elefun game).  She picks up a lot this way.  Also, DD knows what every letter of the alphabet says thanks to the Leap Frog Letter Factory video - she loves that video.
