Tongue tied twins. Any of you experience this?

I had a FIFTH lactation consultation today with a woman who is apparently the best of the best. I did like her but I didn't like what she had to say. Apparently both babies are severely tongue tied. She manipulated both babies mouths and tongues and showed me what that means. My son can barely lift his tongue at all. No wonder nursing hurts like the dickens! Anyway, although I HATE the thought of it and I swore I would never do it I made an appointment to have their tongues snipped on Wednesday. Have any of you had this done with your little ones? I have very little information about it but what I do know it seems like it's what's best for them, especially my son, but it breaks my heart to think of putting them through it. They assure me that there aren't many nerve endings there and they don't even always bleed but if seeing them get shots tore me apart I can only imagine that this will be worse. I need your input ladies!

  • I don't have any experience with that but I definitely feel for you!  When my little guys were in the hospital after they were born it was SO hard seeing procedures be done :(  Good luck mama - just remember it is for their benefit too!  Anything that can make it easier for them to eat is great!

  • One of my twins was tongue-tied, and we had it snipped while in the hospital after delivery.  The pediatrician took her out of my room and it happened really fast - she was back in our room and stopped crying in no time at all.  A lot less dramatic than vaccines, in my opinion.

    Good luck!

  • I was tongue tied when born- my mom said that the procedure was quick- I cried but was easily soothed.
  • I was tongue tied and my mom was told by my grandma that she had to get my tongue snipped, she never did and nursed me for 5 months (until she got pregnant again).  At least one of ours is also but no one mentioned getting it cut.  Good luck!

  • Wow, we had the same problem!  My twins would not latch so when we went to lactation we figured out they were both tongue tied.  We took them to an ENT Dr. right before 2 weeks old and they were both snipped that day.  It really is no big deal.  They numb under the tongues with topical lidocaine with a Q-tip on each side of the tongue and then a few minutes later use little scissors to snip underneath. The area they snip is so thin that they really don't feel it. Neither of the babies cried and one of them slept right through it.  I held the each baby in my lap during the procedure.  Nursing was soooooo simple after that.  It was still a little tender but they could totally latch!  Good luck.  Don't worry!!!
  • My singleton had a tongue-tie and I held him during his frenotomy. Not the most fun experience, but pretty similar to having to hold them during shots. The doctor gave Griffin a sugar water solution to help with pain and then I breastfed him - I don't think I even gave him Tylenol.

What helped me decide was that being tongue-tied can cause difficulty with speech later on. I have a posterior tongue tie too, and I remember going to speech classes, and getting teased for my "accent" as a kid.

  • I was tongue tied and able to bf. I actually asked for it to be cut when I was in my teens because it made me self conscious as I was approaching my first kiss ;-) it really didn't hurt that much as they use a topical. Good luck!

  • My sister did this with two out of her three kids they didn't catch it fast enough on the first one and they didn't flinch or cry. I think my middle niece was around 3 months and my youngest was still in the hospital.

My oldest niece is 6 and cannot stick out her tongue at all. It's much more invasive and scary when they're older. You're making a good decision.

  • My son had his clipped yesterday. I don't even think he realized he had it done. He has been acting the same as always! Don't feel bad about getting it done. I had horrible speech problems and when I was 14 my speech pathologist finally noticed my tongue needed to be clipped. As soon as they clipped it I could finally say my "r"s. Save them the embarrassment of being teased for not being able to say certain words and get those tongues clipped!! :-)

  • I had a tongue tie that was snipped day 1 in the hospital. It wasn't that bad according to my mom. My DS2 also had a tongue tie. My Pedi said, at the time, that they used to snip them all right away after birth, but now prefer to wait until there's an issue. DS2 had no feeding issues so they waited. Now he's 2 and has speech issues. Snipping a tongue tie at 2 meant a trip to the local hospital, anesthesia, 3 stitches, screaming bloody murder for 2.5 hours straight, and refusing to eat the rest of the day. I'm so mad at myself for not demanding it be snipped when he was born. I didn't actually find out he had one until he was 2months old, but even that would have been better than this. I think my Pedi has since gone back to snipping them all right away, which makes far more sense IMO.
  • Yep. Both of my guys were tongue-tied. I felt strong about making the nursing thing work, so we had their frenulums clipped around 4 weeks old. Things have been going sooo much better since. The procedure probably hurt me more than it hurt the boys. They cried for a minute or two and then they were happy again. They were able to nurse again right after they were clipped.

    Good luck!

  • One of my boys was tongue-tied.  I was really hesitant to have it clipped, too, but it really benefits him.  He's be able to nurse better, it will be better for his speech, etc.  The procedure itself wasn't bad, and the doctor encouraged me to nurse him right away.  Less than three minutes after the procedure he was nursing away, very calm and latching much better.
