Reflux

We are dealing with a major reflux issue with the twins. We have gone through the process of changing formula, they are now on Nutramagen, and 1ml each of Zantac, and they are still spitting up, super fussy and fighting sleep unless they are laying in our arms. Any advice from MoM's who have dealt with this?

Last night I got Emma to sleep through the night, but she was in her swing. Which is not ideal, but it worked. Matthew woke up at 1am for a feeding.

They are 9 weeks old, and we have been dealing with this since they were about 2 weeks old, and it just seems like nothing is working long term. The bigger they get, the worse it gets.

Re: Reflux

  • DD had it from 3 weeks to about 6 months. We found that putting a phone book under her mattress near her head helped a lot. Anytime we laid her flat on her back she'd spit up and cry.

They also have these things at bRU that they can sleep on. It looks like a wedge and does the same thing as a phone book.

  • 1 of my twins has reflux .... blows it out of his nose! Hes on 0.6 ml 2xs a day! He sleeps in his infant /toddler rocker similar tp a bouncy seat in case you arent familiar with it ! Hes doing well with the meds and similac soy formula but if i miss a dose he gets really bad! Oive put him in his crib only during the day so i can watch him to get him used to it ! I guess sometimes theres not much else that you can do other than keep them at an incline and give meds and wait for them to grpw out of it! Most of the people that i know tell me approximately 6 months! GL!

  • See if you can get to a GI specialist. DS had it and they were super at controlling it. It's tricky b/c the meds are weight based, so you have to keep updating. Zantac doesn't work for all babies, mine needed prilosec and eventually prevacid. After 1 year he no longer needed it.

  • Both of my twins had reflux. DS was the spit up/vomit king, but didn't cry. DD would cry, burp, scream/cry, and then not want to eat. We saw a GI dr. They were on both zantac and prevacid. DD was on meds until 13.5 mo and DS was on meds until 15.5 mo. I hope you all get some relief soon!

  • Prevacid worked well for us. They stopped needing it around 4/4.5 months.

I hope things improve soon, I know how awful it is.

  • Are they sleeping on an incline?  My girls both had severe reflux and when they were little they were never flat on their backs unless it was for a diaper change.  They were always elevated.  We used a Danny sling for their cribs, and they spent a lot of time in bouncy seats or in the boppy.  As someone with reflux myself, I can tell you that lying flat on my back is torture.

Make sure you are getting the Zantac weight adjusted.  Also, you can give it 3x per day if they think that is necessary.  There are other drug options out there as well.

Also know that the spitting up won't stop until their muscles develop more.  Reflux is about the acid in their stomach.  Zantac neutralizes the acid, but things are still going to come up, it just won't hurt as much.
