Dairy free for baby?

On our way to DC this morning, DS threw up and was coughing and crying. It was quite a mess. So we get in to the doctor, and they hear him wheezing quite bad. Bottom line, nasty ear infection and some airway blockage. Doctor thinks it might be Asthma. She suggested taking dairy out to see if it will clear the drainage. So now we're back on Soy formula, and I am kind of at a loss as to what to feed DS. He loves milk, cheese, yogurt, and such. Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

  • You can do pastas, bananas, oatmeal, some pancakes/waffles, cold cereal with soy milk or formula, some stores also carry soy yogurt (but I can't vouch for the taste as I've never had it before), eggs, potatoes - regular and sweet, rice, some breads/rolls.

Just throwing this out there...is he actually allergic to the milk protein or the lactose? Because if it's just the lactose, he can have foods that have milk as long as the food is cooked (lactose cooks out in prepared foods). This is my DS, lactose intolerent. And Yoplait makes some lactose free yogurt, which my DS loves!

Thanks. We're not quite sure what it is. She wanted me to completely cut out all dairy to rule out if he has an allergy to the lactose or the milk protein. He was on soy for a good while, then we weaned it and he did well.  I thought it went away, silly me. So we'll see if there is any allergy, or if it's asthma.

If he did well for a short time, my money would be on him just being lactose intolerant. It takes 2 weeks for the milk protein to get out of his system. While you will see minor improvement when you remove all milk, you won't see him completely better until that 2 week mark. For lactose, the recovery period is shorter as the lactose is short lived in your system. I have a lot of info on this subject ;)
