I've heard the old adage, "never wake a sleeping baby", and I know it does not always apply to preemies, at least not when you first bring them home, but we're beyond that point. My question is about naps. My DS's pedi finally approved the use of swings, bouncy seats, etc, for him and he absolutely LOVES napping in his swing. The problem is that the swing makes him zonk. He falls into a deep sleep and sleeps from about noon until 4:30 in it every day. He'd probably sleep longer if I let him. As it gets later in the afternoon, I try to pay attention to when he's stirring and engage him to try to get him to wake up, but some days he just shuts his eyes and goes back to sleep.
He sleeps through the night and is gaining weight well. He takes short cat naps at other times of the day. He's 12 weeks adjusted. It just makes me nervous because he barely eats anything before going down for his long naps, and then we have to spend the entire night feeding him every 1.5-2 hours so he can get his volume in for the day.
Re: Never wake a sleeping baby?
Once she started sleeping longer at night I tried to feed her at least every 3 hours during the day, sometimes I would let her do a 4 hour stretch if she ate well before going down. I hated waking her too, but wanted her to get all, or most, of her ounces in during the daytime hours. Even now, she has to eat every 2-3 (at the most) hours during the day since she sttn 12 hours.
