Prentice Women's?

Anyone planning on delivering here or delivered here in the past?

H and I went on a tour last night and weren't really impressed. The rooms are nice, yes, but there is not a single nurse in sight. I guess instead of nursing stations there are hidden "work rooms". I don't know how I feel about this. I have already heard that nurses at this hosp take forever to answer a patient call, but not being able to find them makes me uneasy.

Re: Prentice Women's?

  • I delivered at Prentice last year and was very pleased with my experience overall. The only problems that I had were

1)When I was transferred from Post-Op to Post Partum (I ended up needing a c-section after 4 hrs of pushing), there was quite a long wait. Apparently they were short staffed that night. I probably wouldn't have noticed really but my dad was waiting in the waiting room needing to leave for work. We also ended up being transferred during a shift change so there was some confusion on the Post Partum floor.

    2) The food room service menu on the TV wasn't working in my room. Minor issue I know. But literally those were the only two things that really went "wrong"

As far as the nurses go, the couple of times that I did need one, I was able to page them via the nurses button and it actually went through to their (hospital) cell phone so they could answer my call to see what I needed wherever they were at the time. They are then able to come to the room prepared or send someone in their place rather than back and forth trips in & out of your room.

So yeah, I would definitely deliver there again in a heartbeat. But the most important thing is whether or not you feel comfortable. Good luck in your search!

  • I have delivered two LOs at Prentice and plan on delivering our third at Prentice. We live in the western burbs so we have quite a commute but have always felt that it was worth the commute and I LOVE my OB.I never had any difficulty getting a hold of a nurse in labor and delivery or on postpartum...in fact I had the opposite experience and really just wanted them to go away.  I came into the hospital in active labor and the nurses never left our room. My most recent delivery reaffirmed our decision to stay at Prentice. DD arrived looking like a blueberry having knotted the cord around her neck and had some difficulty breathing. Because of their NICU certification and affiliation with Lurie Children's the NICU came to us and DD never had to leave the room. Thankfully the NICU cleared DD so she was able to room-in with me but they came to check on her everyday until we left.

It is so important to feel comfortable where you are giving birth (there are other things to be thinking about and doing) so it might be worth looking into a couple of other hospitals...assuming you are willing to change providers. I have friends who delivered at West Suburban in Oak Park and had nothing but good things to say.

  • I delivered my DD there and overall it was a good experience. They have a great NICU and with Children's nearby I say it's definitely worth it. I won't be delivering there for baby #2 because I want a VBAC and I moved out of the city. If I was still in the city I would consider it.

My only real complaint was how pushy they are for interventions. If you want to go natural or have an intervention-free birth I'd have to say this isn't the right hospital. They jumped the gun on breaking my water, epidural, etc. Just something to consider.

  • It's not a bad hospital by any means, but it also doesn't have anything THAT amazing compared to other hospitals as well. If you are wanting a low intervention birth it can be done there, but like the last poster said they are pretty pushy with interventions. If you are open to an induction/pitocin to augment labor and planning an epidural it isn't a bad place to be at all

  • Hi

I had my boy at Prentice in March of 2012.  Everything was great, they listened to all our needs and the nurses after delivery were great, very helpful to a new, nervous, stressed mom. Smile My OB was wonderful and labor was beyond easy (less then 20 min of pushing). My only complaint would be the cleaning staff. First day no one showed up and if my H didn't complain and call maintenance supervisor my room wouldn't get cleaned at all; they came the day I was getting checked out so I told them to leave since I wanted to get ready. I had a janitor come at 11PM to take out the trash. Not good at all!!!
