Parenting after a Loss

When your LO grows up...

What's one thing you're really looking forward to? When they're a school age kid? A teenager? A proper grown up?

Re: When your LO grows up...

  • I'm terrified of the teenaged years. LOL  But I'm also looking forward to the older teenage years.  14-16 were my hardest years, so I think I'm projecting that onto Alice already.  Those are the years I fear.  I am looking forward to 16 and older though.

I am also looking forward to early school aged.  Basically everything up to when the hormones start raging, and everything after the hormones calm down a bit. ;)

  • Ever since I found out I was having a little boy I have been looking forward to playing with Legos.  I know that is totally random, but I loved them so much as a kid I can't wait to share that with him.  I just hope he likes to build as much as I did.

In the older years I just think it will be exciting to see what type of person he grows up to be.  I try not to project too much of what I wanted for myself, but it is hard not to sometimes.  I've always been a super stressy type A, so I have no idea how I am going to relate if he turns out to be a laid back free spirit, but I'm excited to find out.

He already doesn't like to be cuddled anymore.. He'd much rather be looking out at the world!! Sigh, time flies!!

The scientist in me is really looking forward to teaching him all sorts of geeky stuff (growing tadpoles into frogs, splunking through mud/dirt - its good I have a boy) and how to handle the animals (we have a farm), teach him to ride, and garden. When he's a teen I want to take him traveling, we never did when I was a kid and I wish we had, see the grand canyon, the redwoods. I want to take him to Italy to where my great grandparents came from. When he's grown, well I just want him to be happy and balanced.

  • I am looking forward to next year when I start teaching "pre school" with her. I plan on home schooling through high school and letting her pick what she wants to do then. I am super excited to start that next fall. And starting her in group activities sometime in the next 2 years. Dance, soccer, or gymnastics ohhhhh the fun she will have.

  • I'm with everyone else...I have a teenage boy right now, and I'm terrified of having teenage girls! I was a nightmare, and so far DS is giving me a run for my money. I look forward to the toddler years mostly, I wish G would stay little just a while longer.

  • Great question.  Probably like 6-8 years old :)

  • I'm just really excited for all her firsts still! Like when she starts crawling, walks, her first words, when she reads her first book...

I'm also excited to have that mother-daughter relationship. I'm close with my mom so I'm hoping she will know she can always come to me for anything and we can just hang out. But I know DH and I are definitely a bit scared of the teenage years. We're already talking about it and how we'd handle different situations!

In the end though, I'm just looking forward to watching her grow up and seeing her personality show through and all that fun stuff.

  • I'm looking forward to the teenage years! People thought I was crazy for teaching middle and high school, but I love kids that age. They're still somewhat reliant on you, yet independent, and they're thinkers, so you can really use logic on them!

I keep telling DH that he's in charge from 1 to 10, then I'll take over. Those are the ages I dread, and he's down right scared of the teenage years.

I loved playing with Legos, too! We will totally be playing Legos with DD (if she's into it), and not those stupid ones they launched for girls, either. Girls can have toys that aren't beauty parlors!

DH and I are excited for science-y stuff, too! And dirt is a must for all kids.

Me, too, on the firsts! I also don't have a super great relationship with my mom, so this is something I'm really looking forward to. I want to have with her what I don't have... and hope I won't pressure her too much.

Oh, yes. I bought Peter Pan before she was born to read to DD when she's a little older, and I'm already plotting for more things. I loved Roald Dahl, too.

I can't wait to do her hair when she's a kid. I had long thick hair as a kid and I remember standing at the bathroom sink while my mom brushed and braided it and let me choose barrettes and bows.

As a teenager, I'll be excited to see her interests blossom. Will she be into science? drama? writing? '

As an adult, I hope to see her make good choices and build a life for herself. I'd love grand kids but I'd also love it she's a solo world traveler. I try not to envision a white wedding or any particulars because I'll be just as happy if she's a lesbian (oohh, double white wedding!) I just want her to follow her dreams.

ROFL. I had a Women's Studies teacher who always talked to her kids about having a "partner" when they got older because she wanted them to feel comfortable with whatever their sexuality was, and they got to be teenagers and teased her (in a light-hearted way) about how much she wanted a gay child. She was an awesome mom.

  • I think there are things about each stage that I'm looking forward to. On Halloween, I told DH that I can't wait until E is old enough to appreciate Charlie Brown.
