Anybody work part time?

I'm thinking about going out to find a part time job, but I'm nervous about the whole thing.  One, I don't want to be treated like a low life, since I have found in the past when working PT jobs, management treats you as such. Two, I'd like to find something with part time benefits for my son & I.  Thirdly, I don't want to work every stinking holiday and every weekend.  Every other weekend, okay, but I'd like to see my husband sometimes too.  Is this a lost cause?

Where do you work?

Do you get benefits?

Do you have health insurance through your company, your husband's or did you purchase outright?

How much do you pay for what type of plan per month?

Re: Anybody work part time?

  • I do, but I turned a full-time job into a part-time job. It's a professional job at a company that's normally an 8-to-5 gig, so I'm not sure that I'll be much help.

Do you work now?  Would that place let you go part-time?

  • I have always been PT at a large university.  The other time I work for myself though.  I do get benefits.  You need to work at least 50% at the university to qualify.  It's the main reason I took the job because the benefits for a large public university are fantastic.  I pay $450 I think a month for DH, DD and me and the university pays over $1,000/mo).  It's a HMO plan but everything is cheap and the dr. are great (affiliated with University).  I had a choice of 7 plans but chose this one.  If we make more money, I'll switch back to the plan I was on when I was single (hybrid HMO/PPO).

Hope that helps.  I stay at this job because of the benefits.  MY DH's insurance isn't even close (he works at a small co.)

  • How part time do you want to work? If you want to work a part time job with benes, you're likely going to have to work 24-32 hours a week as most companies aren't going to offer benes for any less hours than that. I would start with your current employer first.

  • I work PT.  I am an engineer and work for a small consulting firm part time.  I get some benefits, holidays and will be getting PTO after I have been at the company for a year (end of this month).  I do not get health insurance or retirement.  I have health insurance through my husbands job.  We pay a few hundred a month for our PPO family plan.

  • I work in a hospital. I was FT then cut my hours down to 32. I'm eligible for all the same benefits, but they would cost more. We do insurance through H's company now that we have DD. We have the highest tier plan (PPO, no referrals required, no in/out of network, etc), I think it's about $600-$700/month. I still do 5 days/week, just short days (no weekends). Like a few of the PPs, I'm in a professional role, so I get a little more flexibility than some of the other patient-care staff.

  • I work in sales forecasting for a direct selling company. I am 0.6 FTE. I am not eligible for health insurance, I am on DH's plan. I am eligible for all other benefits 401k, including company match, profit sharing, paid vacation, etc. GL!

  • I am self employed and go to school part time.  I must admint that self employed thing is both good and awful.  I would really rather work for someone else, but I couldn't get the work situation I wanted doing that.  I'm a professional and I'm underpaid and get no benefits.  DH has a good job at a university and we get nice benefits from his.  I seriously worry about the ability to get health insurance and so forth for us if DH no longer worked where he did-- it definitely keeps him at his job since I have a couple of disabilities. I need to work at least quarter time to be sane.
  • I work part time doing marketing for an engineering firm and the rest of the time I do freelance marketing and graphic design. I don't get benefits, but my husband works for the same firm and I am on his plan. They require 32 hours per week for benefits. I agree with ppers about starting where you work now. It will be hard to find a part time gig with benefits, but not impossible.

ditto this exactly!   I will say our company (huge company) does offer benefits for those at 32 hrs and above.  I don't take them because of my husband--but they are offered.
