Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Bottle Weaning Question

When weaning from the bottle does that mean you are also weaning from formula?  DS gets solid meals and snacks, but still gets about three 6 ounce bottles a day.  He already takes a sippy cup with water when he eats and has no problem with it.  If I start reducing the bottles does that mean I need to give him formula in a sippy cup?  I'm just confused about how that is all supposed to go.

Re: Bottle Weaning Question

  • I don't bottle feed, but my guess is that if you're trying to get rid of the bottle before 1 year, you'll need to give him formula in a sippy.  He's not getting enough balanced nutrition from solids for you to start cutting his formula.  If it were me, I'd probably continue giving him bottles of formula until 1 year, then take away the bottle and give him WCM in a sippy after that.

  • They say babies should be off of bottles by a year for optimal tooth, gum, jaw and general mouth development. You don't have to wean from formula and most pedis won't advise it until 1 year but if you're looking to get rid of that bottle then yes you need to give him formula in a sippy. DD was nursing but she took best to a straw sippy, there's a playtex one that has grippy handles and you can squeeze the sides to push the liquid up the straw while LO is still learning the gist of it. I've suggested it to friend's who are weaning to a sippy and they have had good results with straw sippys too.

  • For us, yes, weaning from the bottle = weaning from formula.  We will be rid of the bottle and formula by the end of this week actually.  I wanted sippy cups to be only for water and milk.  If it were me, I wouldn't wean from the bottle if I wasn't going to wean off formula too.

Our pediatrician told us that we can start WCM at 11 months and our plan is to try offering it only in a sippy cup and make the transition from formula and bottles to milk and sippy cups at the same time.

  • Maybe you all can help me out then...my LO is still taking 4 8oz. bottles a day.  He's still not eating much.  No purees, only a little bit of table foods.   Should I be trying to replace a bottle with WCM at this point?
