Preemies

Feeding preemie

DS is 5 weeks old adjusted age -1 week. I'm trying to figure out how much he should be eating. His minimum from the dr is 150mls a day. He does that in about two feedings. I've been feeding him about every 2 to 3 hours 2.5 oz. but a lot of the time he wakes up after barely two hours hungry again. He's mostly getting bmilk with formula in it but I gave him a bottle of formula to see if that'd help and he was awake after 2 hours.

Should I be upping the volume? Or is this just typical for  newborn

Re: Feeding preemie

  • Ditto above.  Also, I think the 150ml per day must be wrong. That's only 5 oz.  My DD came home at 5 pounds and they gave her a minimum of 320mL per day upon discharge from the hospital.

  • My daughter is 1 wk today (born 3.5 weeks early) (still in NICU) and is taking 40 ml's per feeding every 3 hours of fortified breast milk (to add 22 calories per feeding) so she will start gaining weight. 150 ml's / day seems low!
